Title: Browning BPS Invector Plus 26" Barrel, SSX .643 choke, Hevi 6's
Post by: dcbuckslayer on March 19, 2015, 04:08:13 PM
Hey guys,
Temperature warmed up here in Wisconsin finally so I got out the BPS and decided to pattern it.  After researching my gun on OG I went with the SSX .643 choke and 3" Hevi 6's 2oz.  I took a few shots with trap loads first to see what my gun was doing and then cleaned the barrel and sent a few Hevi rounds through.  Here is my pattern, 125 in 10" and 290 in 20".  I was hoping to have some slightly higher numbers in the 10" diameter but overall I'm happy.  I didn't want to spend a ton of money so I think I'm getting what I paid for.  I'm shooting with a single bead, back of a lawn chair for a rest, and at 40 yards....wind was calm and the temp was 46 degrees.  Feel free to add any comments, I just wanted to send out a post so anyone else with this particular gun can see what is doing with this combo as a reference.  Thanks!

Looks pretty even.  Should get a little better too as it warms up.  That pattern will kill a bird fo sho.

You should see some higher numbers when the temps go up. That will do the job nicely though. Thanks for the picture and the info!

Sounds good, I'm new to the game but you guys think the numbers will actually go up with temp? I'm not a rocket scientist but the gun and the shells were inside and I was only out "in the elements" for an hour our two....just saying. The pattern was pretty even and I was happy with the bullseye considering open sight (single bead) and using Kentucky windage....

Yep. I have the same gun. Shoots better, denser patterns at 40 yds when it's warmer, the warmer the better. The  colder air is more dense. Same reason planes can take off in shorter distances on cold days.

I tried out the exact same choke/gun/she'll combo recently and got around 160 at 48 degrees (if I remember correctly).

I believe you'll get a better 10" pattern with those Hevi 6's if you try a .670 choke in your BPS. :OGturkeyhead:

I agree with skfooter.
The browning is a .742 bore. Choke it to .643 is very extreme.  Brownings like the more open constrictions in the .675, .670, and sometimes .665 variety.

Hmmm....nice even pattern....

I get 200+- with my BPS, 3.5" H-13 6's, PG .660, but it's an all-or-nothing pattern, even at 40 yards....

Not a big deal if you don't lift your head!

Not sure I don't like your pattern better...

My BPS shoots about the same with the above mentioned chokes....

My invector likes 660 chokes for numbers with 6s and 7s but i have hunted with 660-675 lately.  It also ddidnt do as well numbers wise with the SSX 643 but as others said your pattern is very even.  Keep experimenting!!

.643 seems extremely tight in that bore....

.643 seems tight until you consider some guys are running .670-.675 in the 835/935 guns with excellent results. Same .100 constriction. Getting reany to order an SSX for my lead #5-#6 loads.

Browning's own factory Inv. + choke in super full that they recommend is .640. I've done a bunch of testing with a 26" inv. + Browning with a multitude of chokes from the .643 SSX up thru a .680 Kick's. The SSX was one of the better ones in my gun. My best numbers come from a IC and a Briley Super Turkey straight rifled, both in .665. Actually with a few different loads it's back and forth between the SSX and the Briley, but the .665 IC is the tightest I've found overall.

I too have tested the Hevi13 #6 in my 21” Inv+ A5 with a variety of chokes.  Keep in mind… this is a 2-3/4” shell.  The best for me was the IC 665 also.

Just to prove how wierd things can be gun to gun...My X2 with the Invector Plus barrel didn't like the IC .665 or .675 at all compared to the Rob Roberts .660 and the .675 SumToy that I have...just have to shoot em and find out...

I shot that exact combo out of a Browning Maxus investor plus and got 197 in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards. My Maxus is a 3 1/2 chamber. I shot the same combo out of a 3 inch Maxus and it wasn't half as good as the 3 1/2 gun.  I was shooting from the same box of Hevi 13 3 in 2 oz #6.  It was also a calm 70 degree day and both barrels were clean.
