Post by: aaron on September 04, 2021, 04:01:15 PM
Found this original 835 in pristine condition!   Excited to put it to use(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210904/bcc18dd8d85f2cc53306658e5edd59d5.jpg)

Those guns are definitely shooters!

The original 835's had a lot of overbore. They are supposed to pattern well.
As time went by they started decreasing the diameter (with no notice of course).
As steel shot became mandatory larger shot sizes and the 3 1/2" shell became the norm and Mossberg if I remember correctly was the first out in conjunction with the ammo companies.

X-2 mine has an Old Jelly head in it. A great gobbler slaying combo.

Nice find,  be ready cause they kick like a young mule if shooting 3.5's

Rattling fore ended original mule kicker. Friend had one just like it. Called in a big tom to 24 yards for him and he broke his beak and both legs with the shot.

I broke my beak with one, but not both my legs.

I hope that was from a shot at a turkey, not a target. Ouch!

Yes, dead turkey.   Took me a couple minutes to walk over and get him though :D

Hahaha - I used to watch my buddy shoot his with 3.5" Federal Premium's
with 2 1/4oz lead no. 4's. They're headknockers for sure, but damn they
shoot good, especially with copperplated lead.

Nice find, she is a shooter.....I am definitely too old to still be shooting my early year 835 with 3 1/2" shells. I don't even shoot the thing unless the bead is pointed at a turkey, then it only hurts for a minute or so....Man, I used to hate test firing that thing, kicked something terrible. It does shoot lights out though, can't remember the aftermarket choke I'm using, but the whole rig is approx 30 years old.....I am shooting 2 3/4" shells this year.....lol

Mine shoots good with a Kicks .675, when it gets shot, which is rarely.

Ronnie - now we know how that leg bone you found out in the woods got there. Guy the bone belonged to was shooting an 835.

Mystery solved.

I shot one with 3.5s once. All I saw was blue sky and stars. Have also seen busted noses from slouched twisted around tree shots. Gets your attention quick like.

That's how I got bit.  Shooting at an extreme angle over my left shoulder.    Had to rotate the gun to get a bead in the turkey.   Doing so took the butt of the gun off my shoulder.  Nothing but air between the butt of the gun and my nose.

Well I hope I grow up to be just like you busted noses and all.

I'm a big time Mossberg fan. I started with a bolt action, and quickly ended up with a pump action 500. I've had all kinds of them ever since. I've never been interested in an 835 though, and as far as I know, they still make them. Is there something special about the early ones? Is it only the bore diameter as someone pointed out? I see they currently say they have a true 10 gauge .775" diameter. What are the old ones?

The recoil is the reason I never cared about them one bit. A full power 2 oz load in a 3" shell is horrendous in a 500. There simply is no reason to break your nose for an extra 1/4 oz of shot. I've even backed off more than that. If I want more shot, and I want more bore diameter, then you're beating around the bush if you don't just buy a 10 gauge. A 2 1/4 oz load still hurts in a Browning BPS 10 gauge, but at least you can shoot it without hitting yourself.

Agreed! It didn't take too many shots to realize 3 inch shells were fine.
