Title: Pecan question
Post by: Meleagris gallopavo on February 14, 2021, 09:49:08 AM
I have a piece of furniture made out of solid pecan.  It's crazy heavy which makes me think that pecan would be good for making strikers or pots.  I see where it has been used for box calls.  Is there a reason why pecan is not often seen in calls? Maybe because it's typically not harvested for timber as it's a nut crop?  I know the tree limbs are very brittle and high winds wreak havoc on pecan trees.

I know JLH makes strikers out of pecan wood, but as I understand it, it's pretty low on the weight/density scale compared to other striker woods (snake, macassar, rosewoods etc). As for call wood, I'm fairly sure I've heard of old timers in the States making pecan boxes, but as you say - no one's cutting down their trees for lumber if they can get a good crop yield off of them! I often wondered the same of Butternut though - seems no one makes a pot in it!

Pecan lumber is very similar to hickory............which is......or used to be....the striker stand-by.  The advent of all the exotic lumbers into the call-building arena may have put some of the more common woods in a lesser light.

Butternut makes a phenomenal box call.  But it's not a dense or heavy wood like walnut and many others which make better pots.

Not all pecan is the same.  There are several species that differ from southern pecan.  Also pecan furniture is commonly sold as relabeled hickory.   And as far as pots go denser is not necessarily better the same rule for strikers.

I make both pots and strikers using pecan. It is in the hickory family and is excellent for both
