I live in central Oklahoma . Two days ago I saw a breeding group of Turkey in a cut alfalfa field . The usual , three gobblers , one strutting , one part strut , behind four hens . Typically here , the hens are nesting by early to mid May . My son was hunting a little more north west from central third week in April and found poults in a hen /jake group . But spring came early . No real storms and the rain cut off . Last year I was on my traditional last weekend in September camp in SW Oklahoma Federal land when a group of hens came thru camp , one hen had poults small enough that they could walk with ease under her . This is a really wide window . I can see a hen hatch early or late , But four in a breeding group this time of year seems odd . Hay cutting is in full swing and a lot of hay in this area. Maybe nest disturbed . Gobblers have to be tired or maybe like it . Thoughts ?
Quite possible they lost a nest. Could also be hens that are not nesting and horny gobblers!
