Had lots of time (8.5 hours) to think about my hunt on the way home from my Minnesota hunt. Started thinking about the things that run thru my head while trying to be disciplined while set up and calling, especially late in the season when the gobbling is at a minimum. I have 2 quotes from 2 gentlemen that I respect that I use when things start to drag a bit and my attention starts to wander, my gun on my lap and my phone in my hands.
#1. Russell Davis from an early Primos cassette. "If you don't have your gun up to your shoulder when he walks out you have doubled or tripled the odds against you."
#2. Lonnie Sneed Sr., written on his call. "Hunt like you mean it."
Hopefully you have one that I can add to the list, please share.
Denny Gulvas You get out of it what you put into it
Primos (paraphrase)
"Try and get where that gobbler don't mind walking!"
Phattso
Roosted ain't necessarily roasted......Will Primos.....
The best hunters are not those with a natural aptitude for hunting, but those who have had to struggle long and hard to learn every trick of the trade.
Can't kill one on the couch
You can sleep when you are dead.
Patience kills more turkeys than anything else.......
Loose lips sink ships.
Probably the BEST saying that I put A LOT of STOCK in is from Jason Cruise,
"Work the Bird, Don't let the Bird Work You!"
Most of us want that Bird to Gobble all the way to the end of the gun barrel. When we over call, they will hang up and want the Hen to come to Him. Get him coming and Shut up!

This is about turkeys, not marriage. :TooFunny:
My biggest mentor always says the gobbler you kill is the one that wanted to die that day. I just think about this whenever the gobbler wins the game. Just go find another

You do have a valid point. Covers both

The saying I most commonly use is,... !*#* *!#*! *#!#! *#**!# turkeys!!! (...and that's the short version)
"You ain't doing it right" , to many authors to name. This can also be said about the marriage thing mentioned earlier.
I always enjoyed these 2 by Fred Bear.

I use this one ridiculously often- it works for me in all situations ranging from perfect to great to not so good to this isn't looking good to bottom falling out quickly to you've got to be kidding me to worst moment of my life:
"Turkeys being turkeys"
Often followed by a shrug of the shoulders.
"Old turkeys and old turkey hunters were meant to go one on one. "Not sure that is it exactly by Ben Rodgers Lee
"Get his (a gobbler's) attention then lay a heavy dose of silence on him"...Parker Whedon
I use this and tell my son this when they don't act the way that I want............"I hate turkeys. :)
"A turkey has no where to go, and all day to get there."
So don't be in no hurry.
When I watch a turkey fly across a 50 yard wide river but then refuse to hop over a 3' wide creek, I have to remind myself that..."Turkeys will do what turkeys want to do".
"Turkeys are ignorant".
Me
My late Grandpa G.B. Hill use to say " You got to hunt em where they're at !! " :jesus-cross:
My old favorite of my own is:
"They are vial and evil creatures and deserve to die!"
I'll borrow one from Troy on Swamp people:
Joot em Lizbet, joot him....fill in the blank instead of Lizbet

"If the turkey doesn't show, then he doesn't show; you can't do anything about it by fidgeting around" - Kenny Morgan
"Don't call a turkey unless you are already in a spot to kill him from"
After a miss: "and don't come back"

This one really stands out to me because with the exceptions of woodchucks I have never shot an animal that I did not hear first. (I do not have the best eyesight)
This applies to whatever you're hunting; "First of all, you have to hunt where the turkeys are. "
'Must be present to win' (Ron Jolly) certainly rings true in turkey hunting and beyond
be still and know that I am near!
Jim Spencer once wrote "sit down wrong and you're beat."
This passing thought popped into my head years ago after another whooping in the turkey woods, while hunting some new ground. If you don't know the lay of the land, they'll beat you every time.
"Hunting is not a competition "
Quoted by a very handsome fella from the la/ms region :)
Years ago I had a book with all sorts of "Beginner" turkey hunting tips. One of those tips was "when in doubt, wait it out" I catch myself thinking that multiple times a year. I guess mostly because I'm always in doubt.
