Title: Thermacell does not work?
Post by: Marc on May 29, 2020, 04:40:52 PM
So my Thermacell will not light???

New butane put in, everything turned to the correct positions, and I push the button and nothing happens (although I can hear the click of the button)...  Anyone have any ideas on how I might get it going or what could be wrong?

Throw away world these days, might as well just get a new one. Check you tube first though. You can practically learn to do brain surgery watching some of those videos.

Probably just worn out I've had one quit on me. I keep one in the vest and a brand new one in the box I keep in the truck. Some places I hunt I'd rather forget my gun than my thermocell

They're junk. Bought one on Amazon because the one I had stopped working about 2 weeks ago. Came on the 20th. Took it out the 21 worked fine. Took it out the 22nd and it stopped staying lit and is now doing the same thing as the old one I had. $20 to use it one morning. I won't buy another one and won't recommend them to anyone. Some nice 40%deet spray does the same thing.

I've had mine for years.  I've found out mine will light on the first click of the ignitor if I turn the butane on, wait about 5 to 10 seconds for the gas to build up and hit the ignitor a couple of times.  The clear window will spark and will immediately glow red.  I try to hold mine horizontal and level when igniting.  Just my 2 cents.

Took one apart a few years ago that had quite lighting.  Once I ran a tooth pick through some tubes and poured alcohol into every other hole I could find, it has been working ever since.  It was kinda tedious, but I managed to get everything back easy enough...just make sure you got a glasses repair kits for those tiny screw drivers, some alcohol, tooth picks, and about 30 minutes.

Mine wouldn't stay lit halfway thru the season.  Rather than spend an hour dissecting it, I tossed it and bought a new one.

My original Thermacell is a manual light version. No switches or buttons or igniters to fail. It has worked for many years, without failing me a single time. I've relegated it to back up status now, but I love that model of Thermacell.

I've got one in every blind bag I own. Turkey, Deer, swamp hunts for Ducks, and Resident Canada Geese and a couple more in the truck for spares. In Eastern North Carolina the salt marsh mosquitoes can carry off fresh born poults if they ain't quick.  They are pretty much a necessity here.

Thermacell will repair the unit (sounds like the igniter) for the cost of shipping.  Look up the repair submission form and send them the unit with return postage paid.  I've used this service and have no complaints.

I agree , keep one with me at all times , if it stops working , put it aside and get you new one. Send it off for repair in the off season ..

I bought one (they only came in white way back then) on the advice of none other than RutnStrut.  Had never heard of one then-long before I was on this forum.  It finally quit lighting this year.  It has seen a lot of hunts, a lot of kills and a lot of adventures.  I was gonna trash it, but I think I will take it apart and try to fix it.

I have a draw full of them , my newest quit working after 8 months , lots of swamp hunting . It had been floating in my canoe . So I pulled out one that had quit a couple years ago and it fired up . Maybe it needed s couple years to dry out who knows. I think u will try the clean out on one and see how it goes .

For the cost of shipping both ways, you could almost buy a new one....see them on sale for $20 quite often.

I'd buy every $20 Thermacell I could find.  I guess I'm not as lucky as you are.

The repair service wasn't expensive and is a viable option.

I actually never turned mine on this year, but it's one of the few things in my vest that I don't use daily, but has a permanent spot...

I bet there are a lot of people who agree and a lot of people that disagree just like everything else in life. That's such a weird comment to make you sound personally attacked. Relax man other people are allowed to have opinions and mine are based on my experiences. If you like them use them but there's no way in hell breathing in those chemicals is good for your lungs I mean you just sit there for hours breathing it in whether you can smell it or not you're breathing it in lol.

Yep, it is a viable option and the expense of it would be how much shipping would cost.  Just saying you can probably pick up a new one for the cost of shipping the old one to & from the company. If you are looking for a new one here are some for less than $20:

Not sure why you think that. Nothing is further from the truth. Look at everyone agreeing how great they are.
Listen I'm an electrician. In my life perhaps once I've seen a brand new Klein pliers fail instantly. It actually broke upon cutting like the temper on metal wasn't right or something.
A long history w em shows they're great pliers. Imagine if you bought them first time and said they're "garbage".
Now a 20 dollar item could have the occasional issue. Return it and get another. Might feel the same as everyone else. They're fantastic. If mine broke today, I'd not care. I'd buy another later. Best 20 bucks ever. Try it again you'll see. Ask the forum about sawyers. It works right? Same price and the 20 bucks is gone after spraying a few clothes. (Buy permethrin concentrate at tractor supply, much much cheaper and works better btw) Ask about TSS shot. You spend 35-50 bucks and get 5 mins practice session out of em. It's seemingly a much better value if you ask me.

How would I tell what model mine is? It does not say on the box. Here is a picture I had taken to thank the people I had won the gift certificate from, I would like to try to find a camo holster for it and don't know if model number matters.

By looking at the picture of the unit on the box and the Thermacell website, it appears to be a MR150. Their website only shows 1 holster and it is black. It does say it is compatible with the 150, 300 and 450.

Personally I don't like camo accessories(flashlights, knives, holsters, etc.). When you lay them on the ground or drop them, they are harder to find. I have $120 camo release laying the timber that I couldn't find when I dropped it out of the treestand when it was still dark one morning. Now my release is silver....just my 2 cents.

I fully understand were you are coming from bud, I am just rather odd about some things, like I want a Shakespeare pole to go with my Shakespeare reel and I want the camo pouch for this. I once walked into church and commenced to put all the different colored hangers in order by color and  name, all the black ones with black ones, all the blue ones were next, then pink ones and then white ones and I just did that because looking at them mismatched aggravated me. If you look in my closet all my clothes are in order by if they have short sleeves or long sleeves and then by if they have wording or emblems on them and then the jeans are in order by size and color. Has caused more than one argument with my GF that just puts anything anywhere, man then just infuriates me.

I have 2 during turkey season. 1 is strapped to my vest with the holster.  And I keep a backup in a vest pocket.  I have had to run both at the same time many mornings from the bugs being so bad

I have a couple of older ones that I never had a problem with but I know of 2 or 3 in the last several years with same problem. I always turn on for 5-10 seconds before lighting
Title: Re: Thermacell does not work?
Post by: Sixes on June 04, 2020, 11:55:06 AM
I have no idea how many I've bought over the years, some have quit working, some get misplaced and left in bags and some I have no idea. I keep a couple in my truck, one in my turkey vest, one in my satchel, one in my deer backpack, in tackle bags and fish cleaning bags. During deer and turkey season, I usually carry 2 in case one malfunctions.

One trick to lighting is to turn it on and do not click it for 3-4 seconds to allow the butane to gather a bid in the housing and to light it straight up and down and not flat. I also use the pads until the quit working and not a set amount of times. I've ended up with a lot of pads and short of butane.

My biggest gripe is when they did away with the holster that had the strap with belt snap, it was much better than the ones with the clip on feature. you could strap it on anything where I find the clip aggravating.

Someone mentioned DEET and it works good, but I've seen it take the finish off of bows and it has caused my hands to swell and my lips to swell after sweating and running down my face.

We used the lanterns at the pool for a few years until a couple of buddies of mine started a mosquito spraying company and now they keep my backyard sprayed for me and I have no mosquito issues at home anymore. One of the guys is also a member of my hunting club and sprays around the clubhouse during deer season, so thermacells aren't needed in camp anymore where we used to run a couple every evening during the fall hunting.
