Title: Onx vs. Basemaps?
Post by: Brad_Colvin on May 02, 2020, 05:44:42 PM
I have been using onx for quite a while and I'm pleased with except for a few issues. The new update where the arial imagery was taken during summer has basically made that layer worthless, especially in the south east. Not a huge problem because I use topo 90% of the time. It looks like some of the competition, especially basemaps, is really stepping their game up. I've watched a couple of videos showing basemaps and it looks as good, if not better than onx for a third of the price. Do any of you guys have any experience with both and which do you prefer and why? Side note I don't have internet where I live and don't have a desktop computer so all of my use will be on my phone and basically used as a GPS.

Like you I was an OnX user but the price is higher than I want to pay when there are competitors out there for a third of the price. So this year I started trying some alternatives. I did try Basemap, the paid version, but my phone would barely run it. It lagged really bad and crashed often. To me it wasn't worth the hassle. Guess I wasted my money on that one. The performance problems could be my phone but I also tried GAIA GPS and it ran great on my phone. Unlike Basemap they had a 30 day free trial of their premium package. I have to say that OnX has some things I like but I will be switching to GAIA GPS because it is 39.99 yearly for the whole U.S and has a lot of layers that OnX doesn't have.

My OnX still has satellite imagery and hybrid mode. Maybe your updates didn't load right?

Mine too but the offline map imagery is summer time when EVERYTHING is green. You can't tell the difference in habitat.

Have OnX and GAIA. Much prefer GAIA. Can even add Google earth imagery as a layer.
