I'm wondering if I have some bad shells. Even at 40 yds my wad is hitting the target and going through the cardboard. Seems like I am missing a lot of pellets. This is in a 301 410
Thanks!
Do you have a picture of the wad?
That's like a missile behind the pellets ..

if the shot don't knock him down
the wad will ;D
The Federals we shot through a friend's 301 were doing the same. We found that 9-24 pellets stayed in the wad and were causing bad patterns and the wad to go through the target. That is not acceptable. My reloads were not having that problem!
I have had the same happen with the Federals I have tried. The Brownings were more consistent. Handloads even better.

I just shot some more tonight with a new choke that I ordered and still have the wad ripping through cardboard at 40yds. Looks like a perfect dime size hole in the one. I was using a sumtoy 385 tonight and got my best numbers yet. A 91 and 100. Not really what I wanted yet. I guess I'll try new shells.
My Son's Mossberg Super Mini Bantam with SumToy, only has 18.5" barrel.... Wads go only 20 yards. However I'm not happy with the pattern either. I've shot Ninja and Federal. I did a deep clean on the barrel again and will try it again. There is no way we can shoot to 40 yards.
I will try a more open choke or tighter... Got to get it right before next year. I believe I will also be using Nitro. They are amazing in my 12's.... Been shooting heavyshot since 2007.
Federal TSS #9 @ 40 yards from a Stevens 301 .410 with factory choke. No shot in recovered (20 yards from gun) wad. Average in 10" - 130.
Adding to thread after seeing similar results with wad from Federal #9 TSS.
Does look like the gun is good out to 20-yds for sure!
Also noticed how hard the TSS hits; 12-ga Longbeard did not penetrate thin metal calendar edge I was using for a target - TSS passed right through!!!!
