Question:
Where do you hold your point of aim on an alert gobbler?
Option 1: Head
Option 2: Middle of neck
Option 3: Base of neck
Option 4: Somewhere else?
Option 5: Shoot over top - hunt him another day
After watching a couple of TV shows where the shooter shot the turkey in the body I thought it would be interesting to see where your point of aim would be. My personal aim point is the middle of the neck at the caruncles. What's yours? :cowboy:
I usually hold for the middle of the neck or a touch lower, maybe where skin meets feathers.I dont think I could ever intentionally body shoot a turkey.
Middle of the neck. Only shot to take.
Waddles with a shotgun.
I picked base of neck because I took that to mean where the head ends and feathers start. The first turkey I ever shot at was a jake I called around 15 birds off the roost right past me. Actually I think they just wanted to go that way. At about 10 yds in front of me I picked out the biggest who was also the strutter and fired. I aimed at his head. I watched in horror as he flew away with the other birds with a nice short haircut. Since then I lowered my aim and haven't missed one.
Where the skin meets the waddles
Where the skin meets the feathers
I use a CQB, or circle reticle, so I put the top of the circle on the top of the head. My pattern then covers the head and neck. So, I chose middle of the neck. If you aim at where the feathers meet the neck, then half of your pattern will enter lower than that, I don't like having pellets in the breast.

Waddles with a shotgun.
yep i have a buddy that aims for the eye so much room for error there.
base of the neck :z-guntootsmiley:
I also shoot where the feathers meet the neck.
Middle of the neck
middle of the flock...should get 1 of them ................wrong
I shoot a 10 ga and just point it in the turkeys general direction ................wrong
No really, I settle in for middle of neck, still being able to keep my eyes on his eyes !!!

I run a Burris and I put the dot on the head. My pattern cover the neck and head as well.
Middle of the neck/wattles somewhere in there. as long as I'm on something between his head and wattle he's dead. The low neck/body shots on the videos drive me crazy. Then their next segment is about how great their scope is........really? You just blew his wing butt off.
I put the bead right under his waddles . :jesus-cross:

:agreed: :icon_thumright:
Knowing where my POI is at 20, 30, and 40 yards, I just aim so that the top of my pattern rips across the top of his head.
I aim for the waddles.
Aim where the skin meets the feathers. If you pull a little high then this gives you a little room for error.

Middle of the neck for me. Gives a little wiggle room in case he moves a bit during the shot. At close range my turkey slayer throws a pretty snug pattern and I want more to aim at than a bobbin' head.

Looks like "middle of the neck" is the most preferred POA. Good luck to all this spring season! :icon_thumright:

Waddles
Middle of the neck.
SHOOT FOR THE EYE AND THEY ALWAYS DIE!
I put the bead, or the red dot on the waddles.
Feathers meet the skin and bang dead!
EyeBall
Where feathers meat skin. Or heart with the rage. :z-guntootsmiley: :z-guntootsmiley:
I haven't ever thought about it really.
I just put it on his head where it feels right and pull the trigger. I guess I probably shoot mid to low neck mostly. I have been guilty of shooting one right at the top of the feathers below his head and shooting over a couple!
Daman
Around where the skin meets the feathers, a little lower on close shots. You start aiming much higher (on longer shots), and part of your pattern starts going above their head. I want the full utilization of my pattern and room for error.
I USED to aim at the head but will be aiming for base/middle of neck from now on.
Depends..........If he is close on the waddles. If he is out there....aim at his eyeball.
I voted middle of the neck but it actually right as the base of the head. I like to be able to see my target (gobblers head) as I'm getting ready to thump him.
I put my red dot right on his head.
I'll take what he gives me. In the wide open, facing me, I shoot at the wattles.
base of the neck right at the hairline ....... :fud:
I voted base of the neck but I aim where the feathers and skin come together :newmascot:
I aim at the head. My pattern will knock the baseball size noggin of his sideways, with a few in the neck for good measure. I hate pickin' feathers out of the breast.
wattles or middle of the neck. Its according to the situation.
Add another one for where the feathers meet the neck.

where the skin meets the feathers
It depends on how far he is from me. I prefer to aim at the base of the neck when the bird is inside 35 yards or so. Past that point I will aim further up toward his head or directly for it.
Middle of the neck if you enjoy eating the turkey you just killed, just my preference. I don't like to bite into shot, my dentist likes it though!
I shoot a Burris fastfire - I hold the dot where the neck becomes featherless - I sight in my red dot so that the majority of the pellets are within a 10 inch circle above my aim point.
20 yards or farther I aim right for the feathers at the base of the neck.
20 yards or less: I body shoot them between the beard and the spot where the feathers meet the wattles if they are facing straight at me. If they are broadside at that range I shoot them halfway between the wingbutt and the wattles.
40 or less the middle of the neck, any thing further i aim at the top of the head.
