Title: Son's public land longbeard
Post by: g8rvet on April 05, 2020, 12:56:53 PM
Almost identical story as last week. Did not kill the bird we setup on.   He was led off by hens.  But we killed the second bird to show up.   My son and I split up and fired up the three hens and their buddy in tow.  That is literally the same dead log my nephew posed on last week. 3/4 mile from the truck and my son killed him within 5 steps of the bird last week.  Nice 2 year old on public land with a muzzleloader.

Odd part of the story - my son was about 75 yards from me, I was covering the bottom that one had left out by us last week, son was up on the crest of the hill, a lot of thick brush between us.  I last heard the hens and gobbler and knew he was fixing to shoot.  I then heard the shot.  I even heard flopping.  So I was picking my stuff up and hollered "Is he dead?".   He paused and said "No".   I hollered back "You missed?" and he again said "No!".  I was thinking WTH, those are the only two choices. He then says in a serious voice "Get over here now".  I go to scrambling through the thick brush and reach him.  He says "Kill him please".  I say what and he points.  I don't see a turkey or anything.  He says "shoot him again Dad".  I take a couple of steps and sure enough, the bird is about 15 yards and his head is up.  Kind of squatting like a snow goose when the dog reaches him.  I can see blood on his neck and wings - a lot.  I feel pretty sure he was gonna bleed out-we were 15 yards from him in the wide open and talking fairly loudly, but figured it was not the time to take chances and dispatched him.   Son said he did flop over like dead, son rushed him, but he then kind of stood, took a step and then just toppled over in the squatting position.   He decided to let him bleed until reinforcements arrived - the Second Florida Smoothbore Company won the day!

Thats will do some crazy stuff . My son shot one last year and from 15 yards you could see the blood pumping out of his next . Couple minutes later he gets up and starts walking away so he had to grab it and break it's next . And the bird put a good kicking on him . Congrats to you 2 . Smoke pole hunters

Gotcha. We should meet up and hunt together again one of these days. Do you ever travel to turkey hunt?

No.  I reckon I spend my budget on Canada.  But I have been talking about it.  Would like a Merriams and Rio one day.

We definitely should.  Duck hunting has been back burner for me for two years-Hurricane Michael-2018 :
Hurricane Tucker 2019 (grandbaby).  I want more Tucks and to heck with Michael. I did get out some, but pretty limited.  Not many birds anyway
