Title: older chokes that were for lead only
Post by: mikejd on May 12, 2011, 06:40:34 PM
I am just wondering if older chokes can shoot hevi shot. I think the reason all the older turkey chokes say lead only was so that no one would shoot steel shot through them. I know hevi shot is denser than lead it still is maleable like lead were steel shot is not. So back to my original question are older chokes safe for hevi shot.          Thanks.

hevi shot is NOT maleable.  However many of the older chokes have proven to handle hevi just fine.  I know Remington tested there ventilator tube with Hevi shot extensively and had no problems.  They still marked it as lead only though.  I think the fact that we are shooting such small shot really helps.  However if the older choke can't handle it, one shot and its jammed in your barrel real good.
