This weekend was Virginia's youth/apprentice hunt. Took my nephew out Saturday morning and were on birds from sun up to noon quitting time. Ended up calling in 3 different gobbler into gun range but just couldn't get him a shot.
Fast forward to this morning and we went to a piece of private land where I had scout a week prior and heard a few birds. We were able to slip down and old trail in the woods and just sit and listen. At 6:14 the first bird gobbled about 250 yards out and down the ridge from us. We were able to move about a 100 yards further down the trail and set up on the trail. I set a lone DSD hen out in the middle of the trail. After a couple sets of soft calls and the bird answering me I got quiet and so did he. Knowing he probably flew down, I gave a short series of yelps and he cut me off about a 100 yards out and on our ridge. The next gobble was at 50 yards and we could tell he was in the trail and coming. Soon that wonderful sound of him drumming as he walked down the trail in strut and right up to the hen before my nephew ended the hunt. First gobble at 6:14 and hunt was done at 6:45.
