Just wondering if anyone's shut down due to this virus and able to use it as a looooong turkey season?
Personally I wish they'd shut everything down and get it over with or they are going to linger it on.
Hope they shut me and my guys down so I can chase after em all season. I'll take some total isolation out in God's country.. :smiley-patriotic-flagwaver-an
Our Governor shut the state down tomorrow at 5pm. My last work day was Friday I'm off until May or June come whatever. If you live in a city probably won't be able to get around much. I live on 40 acres inside the National forest so I'm good. Start scouting this week should have a few locked down by April 4 opener.
Gonna be a lot of upset people cause La unemployment ain't even poverty level and they yanked the rug out from under a lot of folks. I'm watching close the state to state travel ban that I hope isn't coming. They lock the borders and Turkey season gonna be short.
here in ohio,, starts Monday at midnite,, whole state. just lost my new York season.. no travling to other states.....
these other states, are they suppose to be stay at home,, not doing whatever you want???
I would think if they should down the states, then they will shutdown the season. The whole point would be to stop anyone from leaving their home unless 100% necessary.
It won't matter to me, my job will fall under the essential classification. If anything, I will end up sequestered at work for awhile
I was informed Thursday that there's no in-office work for the next 3 weeks and if I cannot stay busy, then I have to start burning vaca time or file for unemployment. Obviously I want to work as long as possible, but the thought of being laid off the months of April & half of May is a tasty thought. I have to play it week to week so we shall see. It's weird to think about but God willing, we will get thru this. I know I'm not alone in this sh!t-show, so we may as well go find some birds.

Probably me and my guys also..My finger are crossed for myself, but feel bad for others..I usually have to take work with me hunting so was hoping for myself to be able to leave my damn phone in the truck.Lol..
La..hope it all works out for your sake...You could get alot of Turkey's killed..Gas is cheap...
So what some of you are saying is, NO INTERSTATE TRAVEL though your states???? Even if people are using Federal roads to travel.
It's affecting a lot of people and families , i ask all my fellow hunters and friends .. let's do a lot of praying for all man kind .. It's not a matter if i can hunt or i'm mad i can't . What's important is to beat this disease and live to hunt another day...

I understand that completely, but what's wrong with being secluded out hunting? If a guy is out of work can't we isolate in mother nature? I'm doing a welfare ch3ck on my brother it just so happens he owns some damn good turkey hunting farm ground.

Just got the call that our work is shut down until further notice. They have filed an appeal to keep workin but couldnt get anyone to review the appeal over the weekend so they told us to sign up for unemployment. Unfortunately our turkey season doesnt start till May 2nd

it hasn't gotten to that point in every state yet, but it will be. Most thinking they'll just ride around and turkey hunt the next 2 months are in for an awakening im afraid. Yeah I lost new York as well. I had a trip planned to the north east but it looks like it will more and likely be a bust.

Agreed Mike was working in county buildings and that was shut down as well, just hope this gets cleared up before May 1st.
luckily I always chose 4 weeks vacation for the season, so I am paid though April 20 some thing, all the places have to hunt are a hour away, if the roads are closed I will just walk it.

You need to check out Illinois. They shut down access to all public lands. Can't hunt what you can't lawfully access.

My prayers are with EVERYONE! Those of you that are out of work, my heart goes out to ALL. This is starting to effect us ALL either financially, medically and/or socially. If you are OK financially and medically, going stir crazy socially for months on end will take it's toll as well. For most of us, hitting the woods, interacting with wildlife and experiencing God's glory will help socially and won't be putting anyone at risk. If States take this away well... Greg tell your wife THANK YOU and prayers go out for ALL the Medical Professionals for their service to the people affected.
I can't imagine the families where each parent is out of work without pay. I'm very lucky that I can do my work from home. The long term impacts of this will be staggering. My wife is a Nurse Practitioner at a University in Maryland. Thankfully the governor forced schools to keep the students off campus. We'll see how much longer she has to be onsite.
I guess NY is pretty much completely shutting down, I think I can still go pick up prescriptions tomorrow but will have to call and find out.
Yea I'm shut down. I'm actually kinda bummed because I've requested 4 days a week off for my entire turkey season. But being out of work now is gonna hurt my pocket book. Unfortunately I'm not gonna be able to take as much time as I would like off now.
Regardless I'm hitting opening week hard.

LOL Well it is Diazepam, AKA Muscle Relaxers, AKA valium could help me deal with this situation lol I only take them when my back goes into spams, normally a bottle of 30 lasts me 4-6 months.

I bet that breaks your heart.. :TooFunny:
I too live in Lousiana. Like LaLongbeard said the Governor is shutting down a lot of the State. I work in the oilfield so as of right now thats not shutting down. That being said though , enjoy your cheap gas prices but remember that affects a lot of peoples lively hood. We got a double whammy with the Coronavirus along with oil dropping around 25 bucks a barrel and will probably fall more than that. Our company is a service company that I have worked at 18 years. I have been through some rocky times but we prevailed. We even took salary cuts the last part of last year so everyone could keep a job. We are a small company and its really tough. My only boss is the owner and Im in management. I hate having to call guys in and lay them off. It affects their families but its part of my job. I know it is what it is but its sad seeing poor guys with young children being sent to the house not to mention that we may never recover and have to shut the doors for good. I pray none of you guys are being stressed out with your job or the thought of losing it. I just really dont feel like starting over. I know Gods will , will be done and I will be ok. Hope you guys are to. Good luck.
I'm still working, however this is beginning to concern me abit. I travel to the 5 surrounding states. I really dont like the boss putting me and a couple other guys at risk. Mostly concerned about bringing it home to the family.
Shut down plant. No work for 30 days as of now . Missouri season starts after shutdown.
Don't see how anyone can hunt with stay at home orders with no non-essential travel if you have to drive a bit. Even so be so dang broke because un-employment is a joke. Will be so many after it that you wouldn't see a check until this time next year.
Turkey need a year off to repopulate anyway. Squirrels in the back yard are in danger though.
Good luck to those that can go with seasons running now. Best of luck to everyone .
I own and run my own optometry practice... Forced to shut down. Keeping a couple staff on, and I will see emergency cases (which is a very small percentage of my practice).
Even if the disease does not spread, it will have a crushing impact on the economy... Hopefully short-term. Not sure how we are going to get through it (economically speaking).
And when the mandates are lifted, and people go back to work, many businesses will still be impacted for some time... People are not going to be flocking to the movies, or Disney Land, or to get on planes... Or to get their yearly eye examination and put out money for glasses.
Initially I was opposed to the mandated shut-downs, but the more I learn, the less I feel this way. Primarily due to the fact that these infections are killing people, and causing long-term physical problems for many that do survive... AND, the lack of initial symptoms, while still being able to spread the infection of a very, very contagious infection..
Yep... The economy sucks now, but not as much as it would if 50% of this country was infected at once.
I was the same way,but I think some information is and was kept from the public

Completely agree. I am of the opinion they are going to try to blame a lot of it on Trump, they already are and I think they are going to try to use it to keep him from getting elected again.
That said, I am rather nervous about it, right now I have sore throat and chest that has started in the last day, more than likely nothing but with no spleen I seem to catch everything.
My plant shut down for these next two weeks, with pay thank god. Had plans to go hunt Alabama. Will see what happens with state borders next 3-4 days. We will see.

Appreciate it brother but I see my post was not clear. Friday was my last scheduled work day virus or not. I plan my work to be off every April-May but there are a lot of folks that have been blindsided by this whole thing. Makes me realize how small my worry of rather the states will close the borders or not really is.
Working from home. On the bright side my secretary got a lot better looking. I hope that this doesnt hurt too many people too badly. I have been pretty lucky so far.
Does anyone know for sure if we're going to be confined to our own state? I live in New Jersey and hunt both New Jersey and New York. So if this isn't over by May 1st does that mean New Jersey only for me? Just to be clear if it is prohibited I'm planning on following the law. This thing is going to take some sacrifice from all if that means I can't hunt New York I'm fine with it.
Outdoor exercise with social distancing is recommended. If you are in camo by yourself with your hunting gear, no law enforcement person will stop you. Outdoor sports will help people deal with this. This is what I am seeing. Be safe team....
This economic downturn isn't anything to scoff at or joke about IMO. The US is just starting to feel the effects of this financially, medically and socially. In the next several months, many more people will lose their jobs, be infected with the virus, many will die, many will become depressed being restricted socially and anxiety will increase. This will cause a hardship for many. This virus will effect us for probably a year or two at the very least. It is imperative that we help each other when we can, interact and converse, at a distance, and pray. We are ALL going to have to make sacrifices. This is something that many of us haven't seen in our lifetime dating back to the Great Depression, along with WW 1 and WW 2. Many HARDSHIP's are on the way. WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS but we ALL must be flexible. Prayers for ALL of US during this time! My BEST for ALL of you Brothers and Sisters!

Im sure that will probably hold true if we hunt our own state, but if a states borders are shut down like a few others said I doubt it would be pretty getting caught in a state that is closed.
I'm sure law enforcement could come up with some severe/creative sentencing especially when some people are dying from this.
I personally think whatever one thinks shut everything down that can be for a couple weeks and try to get it over with so it doesn't linger on for months.
i work in the food supply chain and we're busier than we've been in 50 years of business. in the last month we were projected to make $5 million in profit and made $20 million.
we're being run through the meatgrinder as our job is so physically demanding. nice to have work, but i worry what's going to happen once people i work with start testing positive. i also worry they're going to cancel my upcoming vacation days, but i suppose worse things could happen and i should try and stay positive

Right now I'm off work from having shoulder surgery and I don't go back to see the surgeon until Mmd April. I have sick time to last me until mid May. I also still have 4 weeks of vacation time if needed. As of right now my wife is still working and probably will be...unless she get sick. She works at the local grocery store so, I'm guessing she is considered essential. The only problem is her company hasn't really done anything to protect the employees other than increased their cleaning procedure. I's hard to follow the social distancing guidelines when customers are standing 2' or less from you in the checkout stand.

Setting aside all of the societal implications for a moment and talking strictly about it all from a turkey hunter's perspective....
Assuming seasons remain open and travel is permitted, just imagine the potential impact on hunting areas. Some seem to be thinking "Wow, this great. Now I get to go turkey hunting a bunch". The problem with that is that every other turkey hunter is saying the same thing! Places that were hammered mainly on weekends will now be getting hammered all week long.
...Be careful what you wish for!....
I'm in Ohio too. We are considered essential, so i am working. Figured a shutdown was coming soon, we were e-mailed travel exemption paperwork on saturday morning. Trying my best to limit exposure to others due to underlying health conditions, but my company has been making that an impossible task.
X2 what BBcoach said. I read yesterday that the sacrifices that are being asked are similar to what was experienced during WW 2, but surely not the same duration. My concern is how long after the all clear will it take for the economy to recover. There will probably be a reluctance by people to return to restaurants, travel, or areas with large contact.
As much as I hate to say it, I think that if a state does go into lockdown, then the game seasons should be closed. The point of the whole deal is to reduce travel and intermingling to a minimum.
I know that hunting is a solo endeavor, but most have to drive to the hunting area, get gas, food and everything else. If you let hunters get a pass, then what about fishermen, kayakers, hikers, tennis players, golfers, etc, etc.
At a minimum, all state and federal lands should be closed.
Worst case scenario, the turkey population gets a year long break and maybe it helps in the long run.
Also, not to be selfish, but some of us will not be at home, I will either be able to go to work or actually be sequestered at work. I love to hunt as much as anyone, but if I will end up being restricted to home and work and groceries, so should everyone else.

Cannot stop people from buying groceries or medicine no one has even hinted at such stupidity. So how many more people would you come into contact with at the Walmart vs a National forest Turkey hunting ? I have been practicing social distancing for nearly 40 years, I go above and beyond to avoid other hunters and so do most turkey hunters. It has always been a mostly solo hunting style, this turkey hunting. I never seen a reason to saddle up to any other hunter I see in the woods. We are after the exact same thing me telling them were I'm going would be stupid. If I see another Turkey hunter and we decide to have a 15 min we're you going I'm going here how's your " momma nim doing" conversation and the other guy is clueless or new and hasn't seen or heard anything. And your standing there with your knee high snake boots and tucked in camo shirt telling them how you been at it since 1978, were you think new guy is headed in the morning? I've never understood the concept. Rule #1-3 was always TELL NO ONE were you heard a Gobbler or were you hunt period.
They can limit the number of people entering a store or tell you to stay home they can even close the WMAs that have gates. But how you gonna lock down couple hundred thousand acres of National Forest with private land/access scattered thruout? There are not enough game wardens to patrol the WMAs let alone the NF.
I think wishing public land closers on others because your circumstances will keep you from hunting is petty at best.
Louisiana as dumb as they can be actually have outdoor activity hiking etc. as one of the approved activities. They also made it clear people driving the roads, in a car, will not spread the virus. Real easy STOP enter action with others period.
I too am curious how the hunting pressure will be affected by all this. But turkeys are still turkeys and most people are scaring them not killing them so we shall see.

If public lands stay open and half of America is laid off places will be hammered 5 days a week by just local hunters even if you take all traveling non resident hunters out of the equation.

This X3. I already told my hunting partner this last week. What your really going to see is hunters (deer, duck etc) that normally don't turkey hunt at all, with so much time on their hands and going stir crazy saying, "I'm going turkey hunting." People that don't have a CLUE about this sport and they are going to walk right in on you. Also be prepared for that first timer idiot that hears you calling and comes to investigate. Many hunts will be turned upside down and maybe even people shot by this. Those of you that use decoys, may want to rethink that endeavor. I hope I'm wrong but BE PREPARED!

I never said that about meds and groceries, but the restrictions will be for necessary travel ONLY, turkey hunting , contrary to some, hunting is not a necessity.
I can assure you that I do NOT want to see any type of restrictions but if these dumbasses don't take this a little more serious, it is just a matter of days before most all the states will be restricting travel. The DNRs of most states usually wear multiple hands and help with anything needed by the people of the state, the last thing they need to be concerned with in the event of a pandemic and what amounts to home confined restrictions is people wanting to hunt and fish.
I wasn't too worried at the start, but within the last few days, a person that works in my wife's company has been confirmed, another couple that I know have been confirmed and a friend of mine's family member has been confirmed and is on a ventilator at 35 years old. So, I have realized that this stuff is real and I am doing my best to maintain a normal life, but I would not argue about restrictions if it shortens the length of this pandemic.
Our GA season opened this past Saturday and I was planning a long hunt starting this Friday, but if for some reason I cannot go, it is not the end of the world.
I agree with LaLongbeard. I'm probably the best "social distancer" there is or ever will be. Never liked crowds. That's why I can walk 20 ft off my back deck and be in NF. In very concerned about everything but if I'm not putting anyone at risk then no problem.
My boss sending me on out of state runs is putting me and others at more risk than me turkey hunting in the woods.
Some of my buddy's that hunt southwest ms area NF say it was people everywhere on a Monday morn !
This area is already way over hunted on weekends . This will just make it worse . Be safe fellas .

No surprise here point completely missed.
If they can't and won't stop people from going to the store or pharmacy and their 100x more likely to be inclose contact with people....what is the logic about stopping hunters? I don't know maybe robots run your local Walmart or Walgreens but here in the real world there's more people at the stores than the woods. You said you don't want to see restrictions but say if you have to stay home so should everyone? Not happening. I don't care if Trump calls me personally and we have a conference call with the CDC and Wild life and fisheries I'm going hunting period. I had zero to do with this "bat stew flu" and I work all year to be able to take off for turkey season....it's happening I don't care who says what.

The problem is not necessarily the hunting... It is the travel.
Many, if not most of us have to travel at least a bit (30-80 miles) to hunt... And we need to get gas, or food, or some other unthought of need in the course of that traveling to hunt.
So an asymptomatic carrier goes from a larger urban area goes to hunt in a more isolated rural area, stops at the gas station, and hands off the virus to the clerk... Who then gives it to someone traveling from another area to hunt... And so on. It is not just coughing that spreads this... And frankly we do not even know yet to the extent of how easily it can be spread. It is currently thought that the simple exchange of money can transmit this virus.
ALL OF US HAVE A HUGE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY to PREVENT THE RAPID SPREAD of this virus. Traveling long distances to hunt does not fall under that social responsibility currently.
It is NOT the hunting itself that causes the risk for spread, but any incidental interactions that happen along the way...
That being said, I will hunt this season. My hunts will all be closer to home. I will be gassed up, have food/water for the day, and will avoid stopping anywhere to purchase anything, and will AVOID COMING INTO ANY CLOSE PROXIMATY to anyone for any reason.

You won't be handing a clerk anything. Most gas stations are closed to public. How many people go inside to pay anymore anyway? Those that do will learn to pay at the pump. Buying food on your way to the turkey woods is how much more likely to spread the virus than buying food on your way home to the TP bunker? Percentage wise? Lol
I'm not a virologist but I'm reasonably certain the "bat stew flu" doesn't know were your going. And if you or someone you know is bare handing a gas pump they deserve whatever they get. People are scared as shaved chihuahuas and you think they still licking gas pump handles? I know this thing can be serious for those infected but is it really necessary that we also stop using common sense? So few use it on a normal day now is not the time to go cold turkey.
I don't see what's wrong with a guy using his head packing the cooler, tent, getting gas at the pump(gloved) and going hunting. Keep the mingling between you and others at 0. I usually do that anyway. Most generally if i see another hunter i avoid them. I don't care about the how, what, and wheres.
How do you totally social distance when we have to pick up essentials with limits which forces you to go into places more often with people?
Common sense turkey hunting even in a crowded hunting area I would guess your chances of catching it if you stay away from people would be slimmer than going to the grocery store.
I hunt private land and dont plan on mingling getting from point A to B and back to A.
I received an email with a letter attached basically saying that if I travel out of state I have to self-quarantine for 2 weeks and will have to use vacation time for the 2 weeks. They haven't said yet how it work if you get the virus.
The wife was also told that if she travels out of state, she will have to self-quarantine for 2 weeks...using vacation time.

How will "they" know you went out of state? Do you work for the CIA?
I cant see them shutting down state borders, without enacting martial law, which I don't think would happen. At least I hope not. We shall see

We have to self report. Plus odds are someone else you work with knows. One of the chemists went skiing to a county now considered a hot zone. He had to self quarantine for 14 days. I had to fill out a form for a cruise we went on in February.
If we get exposed work will put us on admin leave. If you voluntarily go to a place considered a hot spot you have to use your own time.
We both got essential worker cards today in case we go into lockdown and get stopped. Wife is a medical labratory scientist, and I am a control room operator at a power plant.

I cant see them shutting down state borders,
Gov. of Florida declared he is preventing flights from NY to FL. Seems since NY is on lockdown New Yorkers are fleeing to FL.
We shall see
Prayers to everyone, especially the folks in NY , DONT STEP OUT THE HOUSE , APT , WHATEVER
I dont know how things got so bad there so fast , even worse I dont know how they are going to be able to control it
Wear gloves , dont touch nothing especially your face
Its getting hot (weather )down here in florida and I think this may save our necks as I've heard rummors the virus (airbourne)doesnt do so well above 65to70 degrees...if this so
...perhaps we should look into setting our thermostats to a higher temp to abate airborne transmission
I dont know just thinking out loud
I live in newyork still have show up for work. In my county we only have 3 cases.
Reading this puts it in a different light for me. Losing weeks of work far overshadows missing a hunt or a trip. Prayers for those put in a bind over this.

I think one of the reasons is the New York City airports are major transportation hubs as are their bus depots, this means more people coming in and out spreading the disease. NYC also has a very large subway system which I would guess has something to do with it. Also NYC is one of the most populated area's in the United States.
Tokyo is much larger than New York and it also is the most populated city in the world. But because it's so large, its population density is only 15,604 people per square mile, whereas NYC's is 27,578.
I'm playing it by ear. I intend to go hunting but I'm taking everything except gas with me.

When you have 27,000 people per square mile what do you expect? If one gets it a bunch of folks are going to get it.
I am essential and have to travel to and from work daily. I have to stop and get gas regularly. I then come to a shut down power plant and work along side 1500 other people while trying to get the plant back up and running from our normal outage. I am blessed to have a job that I don't have to worry about being layed off anytime soon, but I also have to report if I travel to a high risk area and self-quarantine for 14 days.
I am playing this all day by day. I hunt here on my off days which is social distancing. I do not go visit any of my older relatives due to being in contact with so many people every day. My grandmother loves to turkey hunt but she has very bad lung function due to growing up in a house with 2 smokers. I hate it but I will not be able to take her this season. I hope to be able to hunt LA and maybe a couple more states. I'm almost positive my trip to the NE in mid to late may is going to be a bust.

Strike that shut down plant part, turns out we are essential so back to work for now. Got my papers in case i get stopped and questioned.

Can you avoid New York City? That is where it is really bad. Here is a graph that updates every day, it shows that in "Upstate" is not in bad shape, many counties do not even have it at all. https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/central-ny/coronavirus/2020/03/13/where-are-the-coronavirus-cases-in-upstate-new-york-?fbclid=IwAR16mi8USmhhpYsL6-nvqQdQqhX5etMteCnoTMD_VVFFBUndTFoPu_-PgUU
Still gotta go to work every day..........essential and all that.
Luckily, this is not a spring I had any out of state hunts planned........just at home for the opening week. Gotta travel 3 miles to my own ground, so........... I'm huntin'
I'm in the hvac business, and I am going to emergency type calls only , my wife is a home Heath nurse and is steady working . Kids out of school has us taking turns watching kids , this puts us both in a bind , and keeps me out woods ????... do what you gotta do I reckon
Got furloughed from my union electrician job at Harley Davidson plant last friday. Won't be back to work till they open up again.
Hoping to get a bunch of turkey hunting done in pennsylvania maryland and ohio. Seasons are still weeks away.
May do a southern state hunt here shortly.
God bless you my friend. I am a retired IBEW guy, you will be back soon. Enjoy the turkeys, be safe my friend....

I am still watching and seeing how it all plays out. We are driving so we can wait till last minute to decide what to do. The biggest thing is if the CDC labels the area Level 3 I can not return to work and have to self quarentine for 14 days. If I had bought plane tickets are had anything already purchase it wouldn't be a big deal. Since we are driving and haven't "invested" in this trip will be considered voluntary travel and I would have to go unpaid or use sick/vacation time to cover those 14 days of quarentine. I cant use two weeks vacation and then return home and have to take off another two weeks.
I'm trying to see the positive in all this. If I don't use those two weeks this spring they will get rolled till next spring and they may forget what I look like at work if that happens.
