Title: FLIGHTS?
Post by: WW on March 18, 2020, 09:33:32 AM
It's a guessing game but do you think the commercial flights will be suspended by April?  I have 2 trips planned and have my fingers crossed.

If this thing hasn't been resolved enough by April such that all flying has been suspended, we are in a world of hurt.  On the other hand, the flight scheduling could be so screwed up by then that your flights might change significantly anyway.

Unless it is just out of the question, I would be seriously considering driving rather than flying, even if it adds some extra time to the trip.  Of course, that might not be an option for you.

With the way the world is acting over this thing, i wouldn't be surprised at all by anything at this point. I could absolutely see them shutting down commercial airlines by April. We are going to see a spike in positive cases, no doubt, and when we do people are going to react. I'd be thinking about driving if it is at all possible.

I am not on the panic train but I am also not the it is no big deal guy either.  345 people have dies in Italy in the last 24hrs, that is nothing to ignore.

I have family over there.

My guess is this will be an issue until at least June.

There are also some hidden benefits to this junk that most people know nothing about. One example -  https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/17/health/china-air-pollution-coronavirus-deaths-intl/index.html
When it's all said and done.. this virus by circumstance actually saved 5x more lives just on the air pollution reduction alone.  Air pollution is a real thing in in Asia.. and kills millions.

Not to mention, the entire world will see a dramatic reduction in regular flu deaths due to all the social distance, increased sanitation, etc.  Remember, the regular flu kills 40K per year in the U.S. alone. Some years much more. I bet those numbers will be cut in half.

USA population is 5.5X that of Italy, so those are high death rates in regards to population

The Canadian and American borders have been closed by mutual agreement by both countries.

Depending upon where you are going, driving might also be a problem. I'm in Fla now with plans to hunt here next week and then drive back up to Pa the following week. Pa has already shutdown all rest areas and some of the gas stations along the interstates have reportedly scaled back their hours of operation.
We always drive it straight through, but my biggest concern is issues getting gas, especially in the middle of the night. I'm thinking that I may need to break up the trip with some stops to hunt along the way. Haha!

I do not see any major gas stations shutting down pay at the pump?  I have gotten gas in the middle of the night at closed gas stations many times!

I work for a major airline, and as of now they reduced domestic flights by 30% in April and followed by 40% in May. All subject to change depending which way this outbreak goes? God, hope it doesn't turn for the worst, as shutting down all unessential flights could become a reality?

Very depressing going to work, as we are in the process of maneuvering and parking the Companies wide body A330's used for International, Were at 4 stored now and was told 24 total, no timeframe has been given on the storage of these wide bodies. Just hope were are not parking our narrow bodies for Domestic, in the future?

I sure hope my April flight to San Antonio will  still be on schedule in 3 weeks. LOL

Sad to say, but if the officials want to follow the game plan they are recommending, they have no choice but to shut down domestic flights. Then again, they are politicians and regularly talk one thing and do another, depending how their bread is buttered.
