Title: Wisconsin 5/4 - 5/8 Season Update
Post by: Gobblestopper on May 10, 2011, 08:45:18 PM
The bad news:
No bird for me YET!

The good news:

Outdoor mentored my teenage hunting apprentice (NothingLeFT) to the right place and time and he sealed the deal on a nice 20.5lb, 9.5" Beard, w/ 3/4" spurs. He's back at 40 percent now
Not a single tick - Permanone Rules! It just has to be bad for you, but I'm too old to die from it now
No jakes were harmed in the making of my tag soup, but I did put the dot on a few for fun and wished them luck for next year

Key learnings:
TOO many foxes and coyotes = a lot fewer birds on my turf
Fox and coyote hunting needs to go on my bucket list
A fox running at full speed can turn an instant 90 and run twice as fast when the camo boogie man jumps out and scares the crap out of him
One crow can make a bunch of contently feeding turkeys run for their lives
A young deer will throw a 10 minute I lost my mommy snorting tantrum and then proceed to hump her to teach her a lesson
Worms piling out of the ground at sunset can make oak leaves on the forest floor come alive with movement and sound - creepy
When a giant oak tree decides to suddenly tip over about a 150 feet from you it makes a heck of a sound and a big dent in the ground
A tweety bird landing on your hat can scare the bejeepers out of you and cause you to smash your head against a tree - ouch
A hen the size of a small chicken can survive 90 inches of snow
Too close = pinned down at fly up time, but way cool to see it all happen right on top of you
Rain is a bummer, but so are dry crispy crunchy oak leaves
Taking a quick nap attracts turkeys better than my calling

Sometimes helping another is more gratifying than if you had pulled the trigger.
Congrats to both the student and teacher!

Thanks again Lance. Maybe I should have joined the Head Hunters clan. theres always next year. Good luck on that extra license.

PS, one more thing you forgot....

If a tree falls in the woods and noone is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

                                        H*** YES!
