Title: Alps vest question
Post by: turkeykiller22 on October 14, 2019, 11:17:55 AM
Hey guys I have a quick question about the Alps Grand Slam vest. I know it has magnets on the seat. Are they strong enough to hold the cushion up while hunting? One of the problems I have heard a good bit is that it falls off while hunting. I have also heard that the 2 magnets on the back of the game bag will stick together and then you have to take the vest off in order to get the seat back up.

Any insight on this would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah the magnets aren't very strong.  The seat would flip down alot on me.  Some of us have modified the seat to be like the Cabela's tat'r speed seat vest.  See this thread:

I love the Alps vest, but found the seat to be absolutely terrible. It was the second thing I took off of the vest, right behind the kickstand. Providing you've had a Cabela's tat'r vest in the past (seems most people have), you don't have to modify anything if you don't want to. The male buckle on the tat'r seat will fasten right into the female buckle on the Alps vest. I have used this combination for several years, and feel it is the best of both worlds.

I've had my Grand Slam for 3 years now and have not had problems with the cushion falling down. I didn't like the metal frame so I took it out, that might have help with the problem others have had. Good luck!

x2. The seat itself is good enough for me.

For me, the magnets were never a problem while easing through the woods when you're "in the game," but it definitely would come loose if you're booking it trying to cover more ground. Having any bulk in the game bag will also make them come undone more easily. When I was covering more ground, I would just buckle one side down. That worked for me, but I can definitely see it being easier using a modification as described above.
