Title: North woods turkey hunt
Post by: Old Timer on October 02, 2019, 10:17:57 PM
Had some local birds scouted out for opener. But my son and his family lives in ADK. Well my wife and I went and spent some time with the grand kids so the parents could get away for a day. Got to thinking should i turkey hunt or bear hunt while im there. Well i stuck with the turkey hunt plan. I would look for sign set up and call in the beeches. After about the third set theres yogi looking at me from about 60 yards. I believe the bear came in to my calling. After looking each other over i said go bear and he ran off. It really made my day and was a nice experience!

That's pretty neat. I stood about a foot from a black bear in the Adirondacks when I was still relatively young and obviously still pretty dumb. The guy next to me bent down and pet it so I tried to do the same and it growled at me so I thought maybe it was not such a good idea. It was at a garbage dump they frequent and eat at and there were tons of people there which I guess there always were.

If I recall right about a week or two later a little girl got mauled by one of them there so they shut it down to visitors.

By the way I would agree, it was coming to your calling.

I've called in bobcats and coyotes but never a bear.

I remember that dump. Went there to watch the bears once when i was younger. Towards evening the bears would come out to eat. Some idiot had his young daughter on his shoulders with a pizza, she held it out and the bear stood up and took it. I didnt think it was funny. I think the dump closed the next year.

I did not know the details of the attack, the friend that I went with told me about it happening. We were staying at Racquet Lake, had a beautiful spot, only problem we had was a coon ate our worms for fishing.
