Title: I should have never asked the jake question!
Post by: antiwheeze on May 05, 2011, 04:46:57 PM
I Doomed myself from the beginning.  I have made 6 trips.  My favorite place to hunt is a 200 mile round trip which means about $45 per trip.  Weather has been exceptionally wet.  I hunt only public property and the toms, this morning,  were on adjacent private property (near a house) gobbling their heads off but only when the crows were going at them.  They immediately shut up when I called to them.  Hunting pressure in the area has been heavy and the birds have become call shy.  I have struggled this season so when a legal bird came my way this morning there was little hesitation.  The bird did look bigger coming down the hill toward my at 35 yards.  It did flop a bit after getting a face full of hevi 7's but blood was splattered over the trees.

15lbs
5 inch beard
5mm spurs
A whopping 28.94  (lowest score ever reported?)

Nonetheless, I am happy not to have ended the season empty handed.
Just sorry that Indiana is a one and done state.

Congrats!!!  That bird will taste good, better than tag soup.  Gobblers have been tight lipped here too once they hit the ground.  :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

Congratulations on bagging a turkey.  I have hunted 14 days (five full days, the balance half days) and have not killed a bird - seen more than I ever have, but never could get on them or call one to me.  I would have shot that Jake today - believe me - I feel like the Dallas Cowboys, "there is always next season"!

Congrats on bagging one.  The birds have been real tough here too. Very quite and plenty of hens to go around.
