Title: Turkey fan help
Post by: Rallen21 on June 13, 2019, 10:36:08 PM
I'm just wondering if some of you guys have found a good way to hang your turkey fans on the wall. I know there are DIY kits and I have used them before and they look great. But I dont want to buy anymore of those. I just want to take the dried fan and stick it on the wall. Any cheap and easy ideas? Thanks

Staple it with an large staple gun or just hammer a roofing nail through it, sometimes if it wants to tilt one way or the other you may have to put a straight pin though it 3/4 of the way up to stabilize it. Basically grab a hammer and whatever you have in you garage and just get it done. It's so light it doesn't require anything special.

You can take a 1x2 and screw it to the wall horizontally, stain it if you want, then take a 1x4 stain it and screw it to the 1x2 so 2" is sticking up above the 1x2. Then the fan slides right in behind the 1x4 and sits on the 1x2 and it holds it nicely. I have saved many fans from the several years and this was the easiest and cheapest way i found for multiple fans and you can dress it up as much or as little as you want. I can't find my pic but if i do i will post it.

Take a look at the Photo Fan. You can hang your fan with it. It works great for taking pictures and drying fans too.

Some folks try to make this way more complicated than it is.  If you clean and dry/cure the fan properly, displaying it is simply a  matter of running a screw, nail, or pin through the base or even just a center feather quill (as Southerngobbler outlined).  You can dress it up however you want beyond that.

The most important part of the entire process is cleaning the fan base well and then putting a preservative on it (using borax is the simplest way).  Here are the steps:  1) kill a gobbler (may be the toughest part for some folks   ;D )  2)  cut the fan off leaving the base of the fan intact 3)  clean as much of the meat and fat off of the base as you can,...but still leaving the fan base intact  4)  spread the fan and pin it down on something (cardboard is great) in the shape you want it  5)  let it dry for a couple of weeks, adjusting the feathers as needed while drying to make sure they are all symmetrical (add pins as needed to hold feathers in shape wanted) 6) remove from cardboard (once it is dry and will hold its shape) and add more borax to base  7)  screw/nail/pin to wall.

The entire process, from dead bird to fan-on-wall should take no more than a couple of hours (total time involved other than drying) to accomplish.

What gobblenut said.

And the fans pictured would look a lot better with about 10 minutes of preening, tightening up the fibers together to eliminate gaps. At least to my eye. Have done a few myself and its the details that make the difference.
