Title: Looking for a box call for Fathers Day.
Post by: bornagain64 on June 05, 2019, 06:17:59 PM
My kids asked what I wanted for Fathers Day and I told them a box call. Last year they pitched in to get me a Stumpy Ceramic pot.

So I want to purchase a box call.

I do not know much about them, and I hardly ever use them. I hunt the thick woods and swamps of Florida and have hardly ever carried 1. I recently took a trip to Kansas and the box call was king there. We used it a lot to reach out and strike birds. It grew on me and I love how real it sounds.

I have been lurking on this thread for the last few months and have noticed some good deals and great calls: call maker and types of woods. ( and this is based on the responses and how fast they sold).

I am looking for the shorter boxes, not the long boxes. And this is just so it is easier to carry.
I am open to opinions and suggestions. I know everyone has one and we all like different styles or types.
If you have a box call you are wanting to sell please let me know.

Thanks, John

Jroddc has a good S&S listed up for sale a few posts down. I have the same combo and it is a good one. I have a lot of box calls and it's hard to pick just one. I think it really depends on the sound you are looking for in the call.

Lots of great box calls out there.  If I could only pick one combo it would be walnut or bloodwood for the lid and either butternut or black limba for the box. These combos of wood sound great from many different makers. Have fun choosing

check out the walnut over cedar available at preachermangear.com.  you can hear it at his facebook page, calls it a soft talker.  I think that would work great in the dense woods and swamps.

Thanks for the replies.

I could order one new from a call maker, and might  look into that.
I have seen some good  used ones on here for sale recently and thought someone
May be trying to sell one they do not use much.

First box call?  Keep it simple and this is the best starter and you'll use it the rest of your life, even if you buy lots of boxes over the years.  I started using a Lynch one sided "Foolproof" call in 1973 and I've always had one with me. For the last 10 years it's been one made by Allen Jenkins, who owned the Lynch company for many years. Get his Single Diamond one sided box call.  You'll never regret it. https://www.allenjenkinsturkeycalls.com/product/single-diamond-box-call/?v=7516fd43adaa    Watch him demonstrate his calls on youtube.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU99Xj5UnbU   Read his story on his website.

Somebody here on the site donated a Preacherman box call to my Pastor this year, that thing sounds and looks marvelous.

Depends on your price range, Billy Whites Hustlin Hen is readily available thru ebay and Halloran makes a mean PH/Cedar box thats so easy to run. Hope you get what you want and have a Happy Fathers Day!

this sounds like a special occasion gift or gesture

I think it requires a new personalized 'made for you'  boxcall,,since its the off season you don't have to grab one but get "your" own call. Call up SS custom calls and tell him what area you hunt and what is the best prime wood he has right now, and I think you should put some pretty into the call, single checkered or double checkered whichever one you like. then have him personalize it to you or even add "has a fathers day gift"
now you have YOUR  fathers day call.

I have a SS scratch box that sounds great, I am sure their boxes do as well.
