I started turkey hunting some 30 years ago in Southeastern mn. Back than you had to apply for a lottery tag and would get drawn every 3 yrs to hunt a 5 day period. It forced me to hunt other states like GA, MO, and Ar after catching the bug. Now turkeys have spread throughout the state. I now hunt turkeys near our cabin in North Central Mn where they opened a season 6 yrs ago. Granted there are not alot but you can find them if you know where to look. I have been filling my tag for the last 5 years including this guy I shot last weekend in area that 30 years ago you couldn't fathom that turkeys would inhabit. Gotta love it!
That's cool! Congrats!
Congrats...I see them all over while traveling across Southern Mn..Suprising how many I see with not very much for woods around.
Congrats on a nice bird..and yes the reintraduction and conservation of the wild turkey is a great story l moved out here to the west in 1972 from Iowa back then there were no turkeys in my part of state now the population is striving and I go back there every 2 years or so and have great hunting in 1974 when I ended up here in utah we had no turkeys here in my part of state now we have a great population of rios and merriam's and have pretty decent hunting every year it really is a great conservation story
Congrats!
I too remember the days of applying and praying for a tag and traveling down south. Now I have 4-20 on my 14 acres at my house on a daily basis. My 16 yr old missed one tonight as a matter a fact.
Love to hear about a rehabbed area doing well. Congratulations to you.
I moved to MN in 2003, and didn't draw a shotgun tag until 2006. However, if you failed to draw a tag, you were eligible to purchase a late season archery tag (old seasons G and H). I never managed to stick a bird with an arrow back then, but I did see enough birds to keep me interested. Times sure have changed, and for the better regarding turkey hunting in MN.
Nice bird!
