Has been a challenging season to say the least with birds staying relatively quiet or not working to calls , however that has been tempered with being able to be able to be with both of my boys this season and helping them both get nice birds, would gladly trade my season for watching them get theirs. Went out Saturday morning with not overly high expectations but grateful to be going none the less. Walking in heard a bird gobble a single time down next to the river but that was it for the morning . Decided to set up on a field where we have had lots of success in the past with hopes he may work his way there if I waited him out. After waiting for multiple waves of fog to clear and some soft calling with no results, I finally decided to ease towards the end of the field close to where I had heard him . Of course as soon as I stood up a hen starts to call at me from the opposite direction . After she and I had a long conversation and she comes out into the field to scold me she eventually eases off in the direction of the river . I decide no self respecting gobbler could have tolerated our barrage without at least answering and decide to head to another farm and head to the truck. As I crest the the hill 5 steps from my truck I glimpse what I thought was a strutter about 150 yards below in the edge of a fresh cutover next to a field. I ease over next to the woods and try to peak down to verify what I thought I had seen but come up blank. Deciding I had seen " something" I elect to make a big circle back around and down into the bottom and slip to the back end of the upper field. Throw out a few soft yelps and he hammers back from about 150 yards . Game On! 10 minutes and two calls later , he steps out the cutover and into the field. Took another 10 minutes but he was absolutely stunning strutting in gleaming in bright sunshine. Enjoyed the show and put an end to his performance at 32 steps with some HW 7's from the 20 as he folded cleanly with hardly a flop. Honestly think he would have walked into my lap but I had sparse cover and didn't want to push it. Thanked the turkey gods for allowing me to witness it again as it never gets old. I know a lot of people have been questioning the season and this bird was quiet on the roost and on the ground but once I found him and got in his bubble , he worked right in so keep looking and keep the faith and it might happen
