Title: Tennessee Turkeys?
Post by: mozart_hunter on May 02, 2019, 03:38:02 PM
Would it be worth going to Tennessee for a few days or are the turkeys done doing their thing?

Just got back from there in time for NY opener. We hunted Catoosa WMA, 80,000 acres 3 days. We went in blind not knowing what to expect, first time hunting in Tennessee, great people. They actually had signs up at entrances' saying "Closed to visitors, turkey hunters only". We picked the first driveway, pull off, we came to. We where early and as we where putting our stuff on several vehicles passed us, 9 to be exact, on a weekday ? This was the third week so the place was "hammered". Friend did have a opportunity there but "missed". Check station said then they checked in 36 birds. So we headed to some private land, 35 acres, near some kin in Wilson county. We did better there. Hens everywhere and birds still with hens. My friend took 1 adult and I took 2 adults, one being a beauty, 3 year old. Harvested a WNY adult bird this morning....Was it worth it ? money and time ?... absolutely ! anytime in the turkey woods no matter where you live and hunt.....  is worth it.

In my area of west Tenn the birds have been pretty much shut down last 2 weeks... nothing happening .. only turkey that I've heard has been Jake .... trying to gobble ....  i think it's pretty much done in my area....

Season has been very tough here. I missed one opening day, took a friend and he killed first bird ever after hunting for 17yrs opening week and I didn't hear another gobble until last Saturday.  I killed that bird about 930.

The turkeys are not done here until well after season. But depending on where you go, it may have been hunted to death and hard to find a responsive bird. Seen a ton of public land pressure this year in middle TN. If you get lucky you might stumble into a good spot.
