Title: NY OPENING DAY
Post by: Tunaguy on May 02, 2019, 01:34:21 PM
How bout it guys, any reports for the opener? I hunted some public land in Putnam. Only heard 1 far off gobble. Hope you all fared better than me.

Not much gobbling, a little around 5:30 in the morning but not much after that. Did not get one but had a what must have been a last years hatch hen walk within 2 ft. of me around 7:30 and never knew I was there. I think last years hatch because I have never seen a turkey that small before. She did not say much but did let out a very low soft purr as she got to the other side of me so she was content. Saw some out in the field but they were way to far away and in the open, I think they were toms they wear so black. Did get one fired up around 10:30 but it would not come in.

Back from First 10 days in NY. Rained for at least 7 days straight. 11 if you count the time I hunted in CT. Herd gobbling every day. Birds way more plentiful than the last few years. Should have had one on first day but instead I got a bb shower from a hunter without permission. Wished I could have got my hands on him. I ended up with a 20 pounder 9" beard text book hunt. 2nd bird I have shot from the same tree. Let another walk after a 2 hour battle. Came in real sneaky. I let him go so maybe he will still be around next week when I return. My brother boogered up 2 birds he should have taken. Way more birds around, lots of 2 year olds. Also saw many jakes. Can't wait to go back

I got out 3 days last week with my dad and 2 boys 6 and 9 for there first ever turkey hunts. That made it fun and they did good except for the raain. We only had gobbling one morning and that shutdown as soon as they hit the ground. But that has been the norm for a long time now. I have not heard a gobble after fly down in years.
But I know there around so I stick at it. Heading back up for 9 days the end of the week. Hopefully the weather turns as that will be our biggest challenge.

I'd hunted NY w a bud I think 3 times. Opening morning, great gobbling and 2 dead longbeards. A week  later another two longbeards and w were tagged out. Both days they gobbled great. The one other they didn't
