Title: grandson's Rio w 20ga.
Post by: Mike Honcho on May 02, 2011, 05:41:31 PM
Picked up a used Mossberg 500 20 ga.  youth turkey special the other day...moved up the grandson (11) from a single shot New England Firearms 20 ga. with fixed modified choke.   He had taken one nice rio tom with his NEF year before last at 25 yards.   We haven't been able to source a good choke  for the Mossy yet but did take it out weekend before last and I called in a nice Rio tom to 15 yards for him...he made short work of him! We are currently set up with the Mossberg full choke...which was great at close range.   Bird was 19 lbs. , 8 1/2" beard and 1 1/4" spurs.   Kolbi's dad was killed in an accident when he was just 2 years old so I have the privelege and honor of being his hunting mentor.

Congratulations to both of you! What ammunition was he using?

Ammo was factory Winchester high velocity turkey loads  3",  5's, lead.   He doesn't even notice the recoil...the  mossberg 20 ga. 500 youth turkey gun is quite a bit heavier than the little NEF single shot youth he was shooting...I had to put a lb. of lead in the stock of that one to make it survivable.  This weekend his year younger brother Tanner (10)  gets to go with me....hopefully we'll get him a tom too!

My wife has the same exact NEF® MOD choked 20ga single shot. I filled the stock cavity with#7½ shot and sealed it w/¼" of hot glue before I reinstalled the recoil pad. My Mrs can now shoot 3" Mag loads w/o fear of excessive recoil!
