Title: Hunting in the Rain
Post by: ggrue on April 12, 2019, 06:04:33 AM
Whats everybody's tactics for hunting in the rain?  Thinking about working a field with decoys since turkeys seem to go the open in the rain.  I love hunting timber, but IL seasons are so short that it is hard kill a bird if you get only one weekend to do it.

Turkeys love fields during rain. I don't like hunting from blinds unless with youth's (just a personal preference and I don't knock anyone from using one ever), but I will not hesitate to set one up and hunt along field edges when it's raining. Can't kill them from the couch. For decoys, depending on the time of the season, I normally just use my Jake and feeder hen

The one important thing I do different in the rain is------ "wear rain gear  :anim_25:" If you have ground cover you can slip in tighter on birds.

I hunt in the rain, but I don't like killing gobblers in the rain...soaked gobblers stink, get you all wet and just don't look pretty

Fields for sure, if it's windy find the Lee side or an open bottom.

If it's s down poor I prefer to wait, but sometimes makes it tough getting in.

I don't hunt in the rain.I don't like to see wet turkeys.I like dry conditions,  so I can hunt around water.

Here in PWN you will miss half the season waiting for a blue bird day. Then you will start hunting wet gobblers :D

I've had some of my best hunts on warmer light rain days. I hunt open fields with a blind and decoys.

I have killed several field birds on wet days-any open areas.  They also tend to turn on when the rain finally slows to a drizzle.  I have sat in my truck many times until the lightning quit popping and headed out while it is still raining.  Those umbrellas that tie off to the tree work pretty well too.  Keeps the water from dripping off the bill of your hat.
