For those of you that watch The Hunting Public, you'll be familiar with the idea. For those that don't, this could be interesting. Measure your gobbler from the tip of his snood to the tip of his longest tail feather and post a picture here! I'm curious to see what the longest bird will be of 2019. Our longest last year was 49.5" eastern killed in north east Missouri on public land. Let's see em!
That actually came from when the fellas were working with Midwest Whitetail, and a nameless sponsor had come to hunt with Winke and crew - kept saying LONGBIRD instead of longBEARD. FUNNIEST danged thing I had ever heard!!! "Longbird" became a thing once Zach got ahold of it bc we all know how crazy funny Zach is.

Don't some measure the width of the tail fan or count the tail feathers?
Haha I think what they came up with for measuring lengths is funny can't wait to shoot a long bird this year.

I didn't know that! Zach is hilarious. Can't wait to watch the new episode tonight.
Haha great post. I'd be interested in seeing the longest bird of 2019.
tagged the THP guys are great shed light on how stupid people thinking a turkey with a 10.5 inch beard is superior to one with a 10.25 inch beard. Just get out and hunt I'm personally hoping to eclipse the 50 inch mark this year in Kentucky.
50" is also my goal! I'd say a 50"Er is a big bird!
The Hunting Public is without a doubt the best hunting show of all time. Period.
I'm going to measure all of my birds this year, anxious to see how they compare with everyone else's.
#Longbird
I like measuring the tail width,
Had a real nice 3 year old come in last week of the season last year estimated him around 48.5" figured that late in the season he should be safe with a mild winter and good forage I wanted to hold out and see if I can get him to 50" this year as a 4 year old. I will be in his core area opening morning this year in KY have 3 years of wing feather sheds from his strut zone and over 1250 trail cam photos of his transition from roost to feed.

My first turkey ever. Got him Saturday morning with my PSE on Kansas public land. Big boy came in at 49 in. Safe to say I'm HOOKED! Can't wait to get back out this coming weekend!

49" will be real tough to beat congrats on your first bird. Don't let shooting 45/46s in future years get you down.
My last bird was only 46"

It will be tough to beat. I had to measure a couple times to make sure my eyes weren't deceived! Beginners Longbird luck i guess.
Way to go! I've killed many a turkey, and bow hunted for them several times, and I STILL haven't got one with a bow. That's quite an accomplishment, especially for your first bird!

I've been getting that response a lot. Thank you!
I decided in December that this was the year I finally stop "thinking" about getting in to hunting and actually commit to it. Since then I've spent countless hours, really an embarrassing amount, ingesting every stitch of information, particularly related to public land hunting, that I could find. I learned a tremendous amount from THP and Pinhoti. I also learned that some experienced hunters are too quick to tell begginers what they can and can't do in the woods (ie. The standard response I received when telling fellow hunters my plan to take my first ever game animal, and a Turkey at that, with a bow, was that I should maybe try something a bit less challenging because that's a bar too high). I found that motivating more than informational.
All that studying helped I'm sure, but ultimatly what it came down to is answered prayer. The process of preparring for turkey season brought me more consistently close to God than really anything in my life prior. Being in the woods elicits greater amounts of gratitude and appreciation in me for the Lords creation and frequently becomes an opportunity to spend time in prayer and reflection (Not something I find I'm drawn to in my daily life too often). I whole heartedly believe that turkey, and the crew of jakes following him that morning, were sent my direction as an answer to a prayer. Trivial or serious, our Father is a giver of good gifts. And the expierience I enjoyed Saturday morning with my eldest son was nothing short of good.
TLDR: Credit to God.

Amen! I assume you're a Kansas resident? If so, IMO, you are in one of the very best states to be a hunter. So you picked a good hobby to take up, lol.
I shot a shorty yesterday...43.5". Had just as much fun dancing with him as any other turkey I've killed!
@shock-gobble congrats on a great bird, a great hunt, and a great start to your hunting career!
You're spot on with the description of hunting and how it brings you closer to God. I have that experience every time I'm in the woods! 49" is a heck of a start! Tough one to beat.
THP is such a great resource for public land hunting and a true representation. They really do seem like good, down to earth people.
Enjoy the rest of your season!
Mine Tuesday morning was only 43.5

Thank you! I have a feeling I will enjoy every minute of it. Currently studying my OnX wishing it were Friday night not Wednesday.

I love the reason that they started the "Longbird" idea. I'll probably never measure one, but it certainly makes me chuckle at the guys that still think beard length is the most important thing about a turkey.
The quest for 50" continues tomorrow in Kentucky. I'll be after them for the next 8 days in Kentucky and Ohio possibly PA for a day.

Mine this morning was 48
One of the smallest I've shot in a while at only 22.5lbs. Wonder what 25.7 and 27.2 from last year would have been ?
But actually one of the funest at 3 hours of a strutting and gobbling in view chasing the hens around.
Oh 11"beard lol
Funny after watching THP and Catman this whole length was the first thing I measured too
I shot a big tom this afternoon,he was 46.5" long, this is the first I have ever measured this way and I think it is a great idea and something new and fun and that is what it's about. They have a great show and I find it entertaining to watch.Keep up the excellent work and good luck in the woods.
