Title: Would you?
Post by: Happy on March 26, 2019, 12:51:30 PM
Would you be interested videotaping your hunts and putting them on social media/youtube?

I have noticed the trend shifting away from TV hunting and I am all for that. However on a personal level I just can't bring myself to video my own hunts. Not knocking anyone that does but to me it is extremely personal and I don't want to share my experiences with everyone. I want to relive the hunts in my mind and maybe do a little embellishing as the years past. It's my memory and in cases others went along its theirs also. I have taped hunts for a few people when I was the caller and I have always just handed the tape over to the hunter and that was that. I enjoy a select few of the youtube channels so I am not knocking it but I just couldn't do it. So what say you fellows?

I don't really care about the personal thing, but turkeys have too good of eyesight for me to be fuddling around with equipment. So no I don't film

I'm going to attempt it this spring. I have a couple of farms that are field spots so I can get a blind out there and get his real good

I started video-taping hunts back in the mid-80's.  I go through phases where I do it some years and others not.  I agree that they are more for personal reasons than anything.  Anymore, turkey hunting videos are a dime a dozen and it takes something really unique to garner any notice.  Plus, putting them on social media just opens the door for the armchair critics that seem to thrive on the internet.  Personally, I don't need that.

Besides that, anybody that films their own hunts (solo), will soon find that getting quality video of self-filmed hunts is pretty hard to do when trying to get good footage of what I would call "traditional" hunting methods.

I've never filmed a hunt. I think there are enough people doing it already maybe two or three that do a good job and then the rest of them are garbage. I'm not saying I could film hunts any better, but I have enough sense to not put a bunch of garbage on the internet and then wonder why people don't like it lol.

I have been doing it for years.. I used to have all mine marked private so only I could see them, but a few friends ask me to make them public so that they could share them .. I am not on any prostaff, and don't take money from any sponsors, and for sure Kill first and video second..  so these are just for me and whoever else happens across them and enjoys them or not.  I enjoy reliving some of my hunts this way, for every hunt I get on film there are around 5 to 6 that for some reason or another I don't get on film but still kill a bird.  It's not easy self filming for sure.. Blinds make it easier, but now that my boys are older I don't use them much any more unless it's pouring the rain.

Here is a link in case anyone wants a good laugh at someone who is not a professional video guy and just enjoys having the memory preserved.

I have never taped any of mine, there a few hunts I wished I had on video, not ones were I killed but some of the ones I got busted on or missed so I could get a better idea of what went wrong.

I feel exactly the same way that you do. Turkey hunting is very personal and private ( I was always taught to listen and don't tell nobody nothing :TooFunny: , but I do record my own hunts edit and produce them.  I wish I had the money to convert all my VHS and mini DV recordings I have made through the years.  I have a YouTube channel, but I download the completed vid and set them as private and never  re watch them.  I really don't do it for anyone but my kids.  I figure it will be better for them to remember good times and show their kids who granddad was and maybe even learn a thing or two.  Way better than a photo album for sure.  All that said, I am not knocking anyone who videos and posts their hunts...THP, Catman, and Dave Owens do a great job with their work!  Very refreshing to see folks putting out quality turkey hunting footage! :you_rock:

My hunts get better with age.  The camera don't lie, so for that reason I don't film any of my hunts.   My turkey hunting story's are usually enhanced versions of the truth, done so for my entertainment purposes.  The older the hunt, usually the more enhanced the story.   I have some doozies from the 60's and 70's.  :newmascot:

So I was down in this gully, and the turkeys heard my calling and flew down from a ridge (about 4-5 miles away)...  When they got to me, after hearing my calling, I had to fight them off, and it was pure luck I was able to reach my gun and dispatch one, and the rest ran off...  18" beard, and 3" spurs...  Weight 33 lbs...   He was the small one.  Really, I am just lucky to be alive at this point.

All kidding aside, I really wish there were more videos posted from "ethical" hunters.

I would enjoy videoing my hunts, but I find it difficult enough just to hunt.  Videos would most certainly add a degree of challenge, and allow for sharing the experience with other hunters (and non-hunters) to appreciate the moment.

There are some on these forums that post some good videos...  The mistakes and the successes...  There is far more crap on youtube than there is quality though.

I would want two cameras...  One trained on me, and one on the bird...  Were I doing so, I know there would be at least a couple videos of me jumping out of my skin as a bird gobbles feet behind me that I did not know about.

that whole "North Woods Law" fiasco kind of soured me about being filmed

I did film one.Its difficult to do,band they can see for a mile.It amazes me, how well turkeys can see. That's the first thing you have to learn.

I've done a few and enjoy it.  A blind is a necessity.  I like it when I'm taking somwone else hunting, but it does add more stuff on top of my already excessive gear list.

No. I have no intrest in filming my hunts. I enjoy reliving previous hunts over and over in my head. Especially when Im hunting. I think of times when im in a particular spot where I have killed birds previously and relive the hunt in my head. Plus Im too lazy to lug a camera. My vest already weighs 50 pounds lol.

I filmed myself shoot one last year, and did the same this year as well as film my dad get one. I only do it for me...I don't make them public for anyone. It's just something new for me to do and I enjoy it. With my Dad getting up in age it allows me to look back at the times we shared in every detail.

Well... I've basically started doing just that, filming hunts and posting them on social media/youTube for the public.

I agree a lot about hunts (especially turkey hunting) being personal.. I very rarely hunt with another person.. but my best friend and I started talking pretty seriously about wanting to "chase 49" and start traveling a lot more than we have been.. and somewhere in there with some heavy inspiration from Pinhoti and THP, the desire came about to put it on film as we start this journey and how cool it would be to share that. Next thing you know the Bayside Legion became a thing and we've dedicated ourselves to filming every aspect of our spring season and rolling with it.

One of our key parts of this.. is the filming is second to turkey hunting.  We are out there to turkey hunt period the end, the way we would normally turkey hunt.. the camera is just toting along.  We're still gonna hit a new state and head 2 separate ways just as we would have without the camera.. meaning we're both self filming. With that comes a huge sacrifice in the quality we'll be able to put up but we're willing to take that gamble.  If that means some birds don't make the screen when the trigger is pulled.. it is what it is.

But as hesitant as I was to get involved with filming.. the start of this project has made me think turkeys above and beyond what was previously described as "obsessed".. I'm genuinely excited as I get to share what we've already come up with and can't wait til we actually get in the groove of things this spring.  It's very different, full of challenges and a ton of work.  And who knows how I'll feel about it in June.. but I think it'll be worth it.. if nothing else than for us to have all of this documented for our own personal enjoyment.

I'd give it a try for non other then to learn from mistakes during the hunt. See where I can improve.

Video my own hunts nah I could care less. A few of my Sons hunts I wouldn't mind videoing just because they grow up so fast..I usually take quite a few pictures to look at and reminisce years gone by..

Friend and I tried to film a bow hunt way back in I would say 99 before social media, it was just something fun to try to do and a memory we could share of "Doing what the pros do" but it was just going to be for ourselves and friends and family to watch.

I would not mind trying it again but as I said above I would only want to do it for friends and family to watch, to many people want to nit pick your hunt and take away the fun of filming it and lets not even go into all the nut jobs out there and God forbid they ever figured out who you are and where you live, it is just not worth the hassle.

:TooFunny:   I don't see too many people laughing watching Turkey videos.  Now tell a good story and it's worth a good belly laugh. Story telling is becoming a lost art.

Answer the question! No I don't video my own hunts. I let parents video their child's hunt during the youth hunt if it's their thing. My children are pineing to video one of our hunts. I may relent ,but haven't as of yet.

I've filmed some hunts with friends using crappy phone cameras and always enjoy watching them. Would like to have a quality setup to use anytime I'm hunting with someone but I have no desire to self film.

I've definitely thought about it, and have taken some phone footage mounted to a shooting stick. Even that at the most basic level of filming is incredibly difficult solo, and that's been the main thing to keep me back.

If I did film, not sure if I could do the YouTube thing or not, I think some of the guys that are doing it right, and putting out the quality content have good "camera personalities". Meaning that they are pretty fluid in how they talk to the camera, and provide the narrative for the hunt.
