Title: Texas south zone opener
Post by: JMalin on March 13, 2019, 09:39:53 PM
Who is hunting this weekend?  Chilly conditions forecasted, but I'm hoping at the very least that the sun will break through Saturday afternoon, it won't be too windy, and the birds will gobble some.  I've had one that I'll be hunting that has made a trail camera appearance three of the last four days.  He's been alone too and managed to get a gobble out of him before backing out.

The birds are on fire right now. We had some success this past weekend during Youth Season and scouting shows the birds acting perfect.

I'm not sure how far south of SA you will be hunting but this report is from Karnes County

The flocks are just starting to break up and the birds are HOT!!!

Good luck and get after em!

Here in Bee County TX. Birds were pretty quiet yesterday morning with the cold and wind. That should change this morning with a  little less wind. Going to be one of the coldest starts to the Texas opener that I can remember. Usually its shorts and T shirt weather hunting.

Good Luck to all!

Got a trip to Kimble County coming up on Thursday. Are the birds flocked up or acting right?

I scored a gobbler south of Tilden on Saturday.  Birds are henned up and strutting like crazy!  What a great trip!   Texas is now checked off, only 41 more states to go!

(I'm the one with glasses.  The two birds on the right were both ancient studs.  Never seen such long, curved, pointed spurs in person before.   This ranch had not been turkey hunted seriously previously and lots of old birds on it.)

This is my favorite time to hunt....birds are flocked up but somewhat on a pattern.

As a Bowhunter, I can use the hens and their patterns to my advantage.

Several close calls and missed opps but got on the board Sunday evening.

Nice going ClayW!

IMO - so far you have "best picture".  Sun coming through that fan makes it special.  Rio I assume?

Ended up getting a bird Saturday, just before noon after playing cat and mouse with him all morning.  Where I hunt, things tend to pick up the first week of April.  Was fortunate to bag a bird so early in the season (opening day).  Can't wait to chase after them again on a buddy's place in Menard county for the north zone opener.

It's technically still opening week, right?

I was able to trick this one to 7 yards this morning

Birds are on fire right now. Probably the best start to a season since I began hunting 20 years ago

Its tough when you go over and hunt those rios and then come back to Alabama to these hard headed non gobbling easterns. Make you want to go back!

Nasty cold front came through Saturday morning for the north zone opener, but the wind laid down down Sunday afternoon and I was able to get a nice one to work to the call.
