Title: Multi state turkey hunt?
Post by: mnhunter2 on March 06, 2019, 11:30:30 PM
My plan is to hunt in Iowa, 1 Tom, then to Kansas, 2 toms,  then finish in Nebraska, 3 toms, I plan to tag and freeze the birds as I go, do you think it will be legal in these states?

Yep as long as they are tagged.

Clean and Process them with proof of sex then freeze.

In NE for example: Legs with spurs attached, beard attached to breast. Read up on each state's regs.

Follow each states Regs and you'll be just fine. I've done a similar thing and was checked in Nebraska with Kansas birds on me and there was no issues.

Kansas allows you to electronically check a turkey on a smart phone and then break it down however you want.

Nebraska allows you to break a turkey down a certain way. Best to read the regs on that. They are somewhat new, at least the way they explain it in detail.

I don't know what Iowa requires.

The problem is what is a Nebraska or Iowa warden going do when he sees a Kansas turkey all cut up. Freezing "in the feather" is good regulatory wise...maybe not so much practically tho.

What I do is talk to a warden that is local to where I am going to hunt. I want to see what HE says, not the gal at the main office. Write down his name and number and what he said, this is in case a different warden checks you, he should know the guy you talked to.

If you do decide to call a warden in each state, start early. It can take days and even weeks to actually connect with a warden by phone. While you have him talking you can ask some turkey hunting related questions too. If you are prepared with good questions you may get good answers.

So in Nebraska what if you decide to eat the breast? Beard isn't attached anymore?

I put spurs/beard in a gallon freezer bag and then the breast in another gallon freezer bag. Tags stay with spurs/beards. I label each bag with my name, date of harvest, location of harvest, license #, and confirmation # (if applicable). Sometimes I may include another detail or two on the bag if necessary. Of course ALWAYS read the regulations for the state prior to your hunt. I include enough info on my bags that if there is any question regarding a bird I have harvested, the game warden could easily look up any information he needs to.

When traveling I usually find someone to give the breast meat to, not hard to do, and then I put legs and beards in a zip lock and put tags and confirmation numbers in the bag too..
