We have a winner. Congratulations #37, Tomstopper
If you find an old shotgun and there is a place on the forearm where it appears to be stained either red or blue, that's where some old-timer sanded and chalked a place to play his scratch box while he had his gun rested on his knee in position to shoot.
Now post up your trivia and we'll do like always. Number generator for the corresponding reply number. Ends at a random time Friday.
Winner gets a 3 pack of diaphragm calls. Let's do this years new addition ( Killer Deuce) and their pick for the other two.
I don't know if it's trivia, but my dad's first turkey gun was an LC Smith 16 guage double barrel. Killed lots of birds with it.
my dads old shotgun with stenciled turkey heads on stock for each one he got, still have gun.he had 22 stencil heads
According to some odd website, you can tell the gender of the turkey by looking at the poop it left behind. "J" shaped is a male and "spiral" shaped is female.

Here's a bit of trivia from Mr. Ben Franklin:
"For my own part, I wish the bald eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country; he is a bird of bad moral character; he does not get his living honestly...like those among men who live by sharping and robbing...he is generally poor, and often very lousy. Besides, he is a rank coward; the little king-bird, not bigger than a sparrow, attacks him boldly and drives him out of the district...For in truth, the turkey is in comparison a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America. Eagles have been found in all countries, but the turkey was peculiar to ours..."
I know it's not about turkey hunting, but it has always been one of my favorite quotes.
The average life span of a wild turkey is 3-4 years old.
An adult turkey has approximately 3500 feathers.

A hen and her poults leave the nest 12 to 24 hours after all the poults hatch.

A turkey's vision is 3 times greater than a human's and their field of view is 270 degrees.

A dead hen, even if she has a beard, will never raise poults.
Turkey poults can fly to roost at about 10 days of age. Turkey adults can fly up to about 55 mph. Thanks for the opportunity gooserbat
Typically a turkey beard grows 4-5 inches per year. But a beard is not a true gage for age, like in MN and upper states with snow and ices. Beards can freeze to limb or branches and break off. Also dragging on snow or ground can break off ends.
If in the woods and needing a turkey call in a pinch , you can cut a piece of river cane , hollow it out and make some decent yelps and clucks. Good enough to kill a bird. Ask me how I know.????
You can never call a turkey downhill LOL

When it comes to turkeys, almost nothing is "trivial." I want to know it all!
Turkey's can run up to 25 mph.
Thanks for the chance!!
Turkeys aren't native to many of the states in which we now have a thriving population. I read that the merriams in the black hills in South Dakota were a result of 3 different transplants of birds from New Mexico/Arizona. Crazy to think the population we have today is the result of the transfer of roughly 20 birds.
Sperm is stored in the body of a hen for several week after mating and repeated mating is not necessary for a clutch of fertile eggs.

Thanks for the chance.

If a turkey comes in gets nervous and adjust his wings on his back you better be pulling the trigger!
Turkeys have a keen sense of hearing and can pinpoint sounds from as far as a mile away. So..... If you call them they will come :funnyturkey:
Turkeys aggrevate me.
a gobblers age can not be accurately determined by his spurs or beard length. Gobblers are birds that are in there second full spring breeding season....of course jakes can be aged. You can make a reasonable estimate, but it's not a measurable certainty.
A turkey flock re-establishes its pecking order daily.
:icon_thumright:
Male droppings are spiral - shaped. The larger the diameter the older the bird .... :OGturkeyhead:
If turkeys had a better sense of smell, we would all hate them even more
A turkey gobble can be heard over a mile away....
my first turkey gun was a new england firearm 410 and i killed a few not a bunch lol i loved missing school to chase those longbeards :turkey2:
Pheasant roosters will come to turkey calling, and I've had some even display and drum for a hen turkey decoy.
Turkeys can see colors, can not control their sphincters to deficate and cannot smell. They can see and hear many times better than humans. My Aggie Veterinarian 3rd year student looked that up for me.

Old Gobbler members / readers generally spend more money than they ever planned to on gear, gadgets, or calls... every year.
The record adult male wild turkey, according to the National Wild Turkey Federation, weighed 37.1 lbs.
Gobbler fan usually has 18 feathers
When you have your foot on a gobblers neck that's as old as he'll ever get.
Beards grow about 4 to 5 inches per year throughout a gobbler's life.
Hen turkeys lay the first egg and usually skip day two before laying the next dozen or so eggs one a day until they finish.
The Beard: The most obvious difference between hens and gobblers is the beards that the males (gobblers) have. This is often the easiest method to identify gobblers but in some instances (~10%) hens have beards too! So use this as you first indicator but just keep in mind that it isn't fool proof.

Studies have shown that snood length is associated with male turkey health. In addition, a 1997 study in the Journal of Avian Biology found that female turkeys prefer males with long snoods and that snood length can also be used to predict the winner of a competition between two males.

Turkey hunters that shoot a basketball-size pattern at 40 yards miss more turkeys at 10 than anybody else. :toothy9:
They got their name from the country (Turkey)
(Just learned this the other day, actually)
The turkey is thought to have been a sacred animal in ancient Mexican cultures, including the Mayans, Aztecs and Toltecs. These cultures called the turkey "Great Xolotl" and "jewelled birds."
Eating wild turkey is much more healthier, than eating the commercially raised crap they sell in stores
The Aztecs domesticated another subspecies, M. gallapavo gallopavo, the south Mexican wild turkey, and the Spanish brought those turkeys to Europe. The pilgrims then brought several of these domestic turkeys back to North America.
a turkey's brain is the size of a pea but they outsmart many hunters :funnyturkey:
Turkeys are actually a type of pheasant
Natural gas can be liquefied and stored in a tank at a ratio of 600 to 1 and is stored at -260 degrees.
Thats what I do for a living
I live in Arkansas and the turkey population is down. In 2003 the state harvested 19,947 and in 2018 the harvest was 7,884. The county I killed one in last year only harvested 27.
If you're in a pinch and don't have any turkey calls with you, a drinking straw will work just fine. If you know the basics of a suction call that is.
The diaphragm call was invented by a non hunting street performer in the 1920s
Turkeys will consume amphibians and small reptiles such as lizards and small snakes
There's been great debate as to whether or not turkey was even present on the menu at the first Thanksgiving. It's been suggested by some that the traditional TG bird was a peacock. Given that info, I'll stick with turkey. Peacocks are straight loco.

Benjamin Franklin wanted the Turkey, not the bald eagle, to be the national bird.

What percentage of adult gobblers never grow a beard? .3 percent
A chunk of wild turkey that has been marinated in teriyaki overnight then wrapped in bacon with a piece of onion and pepper then grilled or broiled is as good as it gets!
