I would recommend a Buff type face mask. I just ordered one off of Amazon for like $12 in MO Obsession for my 7 year old and it fits him well. There are many different companies now making the spandex type face masks.
If u can't find one that fits ye old burnt cork trick will work in a pinch and he might think it is "cool."

My boys always liked painting their faces (fun, and they both wear glasses so they don't like the steam effect). The only problem is that the paint often ends up on the seat covers of my truck, too!
