Title: Decoy Stakes
Post by: NCL on February 13, 2019, 02:01:44 PM
The discussion about decoy stakes got me thinking about the problem of a stake in hard ground. Where I hunt early in the season the stakes that come with a decoy will work as the ground is soft. Once the ground starts to dry out it becomes like cement and it becomes very hard to plant the stake. With a little looking there may be a soft spot or hole but usually the stake will not go in very deep and the first wind and over goes the decoy. So what do you use to stake your decoy in harder ground?

Idk I've never come across ground so hard a stake wouldn't work but if so I'd just make something. Maybe you just need to eat wheaties?? Lol I'm only kidding!!!

A lot of goose decoys are on stands in the middle of fields and don't blow over. Those may work for you.

I have had this problem and have carried an old time hand drill to make a hole. Kind of heavy if you're moving around, tho.

I have a short piece of copper pipe I cut, drilled a hole in to use a "T" to put in stakes. We deal with some cold/frozen ground and my DSD's have steel stakes, so it's just give them a good push. I also have a couple of stakes from my goose decoys we have for some field sets that you can just set on the ground, they have a round "base" designed/made as part of the stake.

Thanks everyone, both the "T" drill and the stand sound good. Tried the Wheaties, pushed too hard and broke the stake...LOL
