Title: Hevi 7 or lb 6
Post by: Prohunter3509 on February 10, 2019, 08:56:57 AM
Would a hevi 7 have as much knock down and power as a lb 6 at 40 yds.
I was thinking about giving them a try. I do hunt a lot of woods not too many fields

I used the Hevi Shot magnum blend (5,6 and 7's) last year as lead is no longer allowed and the turkey I shot went down like he was pole axed.  I guess that is the long way of saying either should be good but greater mass, the 6's. will have greater energy at the same speed then 7's.

I would use whichever one patterned in my gun better. I was thinking of switching from H13 #7s to LB#6s,but the LB's patterned horrible so I stayed with #7s.

Where you can kill them with the 6s you can kill them with the 7s, especially if brush is more your concern than distance. Reason I say that is typically thick woods hunters who are thinking about the brush take calculated and logical shots in terms of distance and brush.  If you hunt where it's thick enough a true 40yd shot is a long ways and hard to find, and with most shots taken well inside of that the 7s will be all you need.

The 7s will have more than enough energy to do what you want.  My 12ga actually shoots a tighter pattern with LB6 than the Hevi 7s.  I choose to use the 7s because there are far more pellets which makes for a much wider/forgiving pattern @ 40.

Yes. I'd take a hevi 7 over a lead 6 everyday.

I've used #6 Hevi and Mag Blends and Longbeard #5's. Every turkey I've shot has been dead...
Of course the Hevi Shot is heavier and probably hits harder but within 40-45 yds., pretty much anything that patterns well kills a turkey dead.
It's fun to experiment and it's cool to know you have a little margin for error with Hevi, but, for all intents and purposes, you get the same result. A dead turkey with all of them...AND there's the cost factor...

I shot #6s for a long time but once Hevi-Shot came out with the strait #7s I switched and haven't looked bag. 40yds and closer they produce a great pattern and being htl they will knock one off his feet no problem. I don't think you'd be disappointed and will have great results using the #7s.
