I know some throw them over their shoulder whether by hand or tote or carry them like a pocket book but how many actually put them in their vest?
I use the vest bag. Seems pointless to have one and not use it.

Never, ditched the "vest" a long time ago and went to a Badlands Hip Pack, I have a paracord tote I made, and a waterproof sock I put over the head and neck.
MK M GOBL
Yep, I use the vest bag to carry. Unless its just a short walk.

I just think a gobbler is meant to be carried or strapped and slung over the shoulder instead of being stuffed inside a vest pocket. Just personal preference I guess. I like feeling him peck the back of my leg all the way back to the truck.

I have always used the bag in my vest but this year I am ditching the vest for Ms. Glenda's tote and I have brought a paracord tote to carry one out I hope, and a sock on his head? I love getting blood all down my back!!
I got a leather strap so I can carry him head up and tell him what he did wrong all the way back to the truck

I agree with you. But when I'm 3.8 mile in, he can ride in the trunk lol.

I use my vest pocket.
Typically use sling them over my shoulder by their feet. I using a handmade tote but if its particularly steep and nasty I will use the back of my vest. I don't mind the blood and my vest has stains from the only turkey I have killed still in the seat.
I use a homemade leather tote. The strap is wide and carries well.
I have a couple totes I use or let a friend use. It is a great time to thank the Lord as I walk out so I like free hands. I have too much stuff being stored in the bag to use it. I also enjoys patting/petting the feathers as I walk out remembering our dance.

Depends. If on public land, he goes in the vest for safety reasons (lots of idiots out there). If on private, he goes over the shoulder.

Tote him over my shoulder when hiking out.
He rides in the vest when mountain biking out.
He gets buried in the ground once I get the meat, tail, beard and spurs. Circle complete!
I put them in a blaze orange sock and then in the back of the vest. I hunt public land and the sock makes me feel better. Holds the bird together and keeps feathers intact.

Paracord tote over my shoulder.
Over the shoulder wrapped in an orange vest and a sock over its head.
They deserve to be carried out. I can't bring myself to cram him in a vest like the Wednesday morning garbage

Dead on for me too. Doesn't matter how far it is, it's a shame to stuff him in something and I like the tricep burn and the back pocket hammer. Also a tip: when you let the wings stay open for the first hour or so and freely swing (biggest reason I tote them out even in the thick stuff) they stay loose and are great for pictures later, if you let them fold in early they stiffen and make for a tightly bound, stiff bird later.
Usually the vest, but trying Glenda's satchel along with Para cord tote this Spring. Like the sock idea, for years I used a "free" orange plastic slinger bag the newspaper comes in. I roll and fold the bag up very small, put a rubber band around it, stuff it in a plastic 35mm film can (which are hard to come by these days)....nice and light, small. Bag, band it and go.
Paracord strap over the shoulder for me. A vest ride if necessary but it does tend to mess the feathers up a little if more pictures are wanted .
I use a suitable length of 5/8 inch poly rope, tied together. I loop the head in one end and the legs looped in the other end. I carry him over my shoulder, head end first so his feathers don't get messed up when I go through brush. If my shoulder gets sore, I just switch shoulders. I carry three or four bags from the produce section of the grocery store and three or four rubber bands. I put a bag over his head and secure the bag with a rubber band. The other bags and rubber bands are for the next time. Cheap, lightweight and effective. I carry the rope in my vest.
When walking any sort of distance I fold the head under the wing and carry him on my hip using both arms. I was taught to do this on the first turkey I ever killed.
It distributes the weight evenly and makes it much easier to continuously carry.
Throwing him over your shoulder is for the polaroids... :icon_thumright:
He will always be toted over the shoulder for at least a little while, if it's a long walk he will ride in the vest for awhile but short walk, he is getting toted (assuming private land)
Like most on here, I carry my turkey over my shoulder. I made a tote with a loop in each end and an old shoe insole in the middle to keep the cord from digging into my shoulder. Carrying a gobbler, decoy bag, ground lounger, short blind, and a shotgun is about all a guy wants to mess with.
Everyone is entitled to their own style. As for me, that joker is taking a ride over the shoulder. Blood stains mean good things

There are. The private land I hunt is strictly managed by the land owner and his workers so not a lot of people trespass there. I am not saying that all people on public land are idiots. I just don't know them , and have had too many close calls (people stalking your calls and setups and even had a hen decoy shot in the fall in NY).

Over the shoulder
In the vest since most hikes in/out are close to a mile or on a mountain.
If it's a short hike he goes over the shoulder w an orange plastic bag over his head.
I use a long piece of paracord, tripled, quadrupled or whatever. That way I can use the cord if needed for something else. Never got around to weaving a paracord tote strap. I also use a piece of the same cord to make my "trophy".

Agree with these comments 100%. I suppose I am now either in or approaching the "old-timer" status at 67 and having hunted spring gobblers since 1965. Carried my first "called-in" gobbler about five miles out of the Gila Wilderness in 1975. He rode on my shoulder,...no vest, totes, or straps,...all the way.
I can still remember that feeling of balancing his sternum on my shoulder, switching my aching arms as I walked out while gripping his legs just above his feet,...his head bumping against my back and the feeling of warm blood seeping through my pant legs,...all the while making sure I was doing my best not to damage any of those beautiful feathers on that bird.
I told myself right then that this is how I would carry all my gobblers out,...wherever I might be and no matter how far. For me, it is just a sign of respect for the gobbler,...I will give them no less for as long as I am capable.
I usually use the game bag in the vest. If you put them in carefully, it won't ruffle the fathers or damage anything.
I've been known to hang him in the shade just off the road and hike to the truck and drive back for him rather than carry one a long way for no good reason. Not recommended for public land hunts.

Trash day is Friday, and I'd never put garbage in my vest. ;)Couple of miles out, and that vest pocket is sweet! But I respect everyones turkey toting choice!
I've always just carried them over my shoulder with a blaze patch (I only hunt public land). But this year, I'm going to get a turkey tote and carry them out that way. Seems like a more more efficient method.
I always just use a tote
I tote them just to keep their feathers from getting messed up as I normally take additional pictures once home. If it wasn't for that I would shove them in the vest or just clean them in the woods.
Turkey strap
Over the shoulder 99% of the time. I can only think of one or two times I put one in the back of my vest.
I thought long and hard about buying a turkey strap but just couldn't justify adding another piece of gear to my vest when I can carry it out over the shoulder or in vest.
I use the Hunters Specialties blaze orange turkey bag. You wear it like a backpack, and it is loose enough to fit over a backpack if you're already wearing one or a decoy bag. It allows you to be hands free. Keeps the blood off of your camo's. Keeps you safe if you're hunting public land. And it folds up and doesn't take up much room in your vest, satchel or backpack.

Over the shoulder for me. Personally, like some of you, i have too much respect for the bird to stuff him in a vest game bag. May sound silly to some, but i just couldn't bring myself to do it. I need to look into the bag/sock over the head trick though.
As a kid I always used a vest bag. It's a pia. I'd ratger just carry em on my shoulder. Got a rope for anytime I needed it to make sling. More often than not that rope has been used for a youths turkey gun sling.
It's over the shoulder for me unless it's a steep climb or creek crossing. I like the blood soaked pants and burning forearms! If I have to stop and a take a break it's another opportunity to admire him and give thanks.

I've got one of those big wheel golf bag carrier i use to haul my turkeys out with , most all my turkeys are to big to carry over my shoulder....
I'm usually a long hike (miles) from the truck and I've found the vest works best for hauling out a bird.
When using the vest or just over the shoulder I put a plastic grocery bag over his head. Keeps the vest or back of your pants from getting too bloody from that jelly head.
Short hike and it's tote around legs and over the shoulder.
Long hike and it's in the back of my vest.
I do a lot of walking using both vest and at times a hip pack. Tradition I feel says "sling em over your shoulder". When my boys are with me and they shoot one I tell them it's time to pay the price. Me personally being called an ol' geezer ; if I'm back in a ways and solo they go in the vest!

Thanks for posting the photo. I love to re-purpose stuff and will be looking at yard sales for a back pack from which I'll take the adjustable shoulder straps to which I'll attach a small duffle bag. I'll also sew on a wide band of orange fabric for safety. I figure for a couple of bucks I can make this!

Anyone using a leather strap such as the Otis leather companies? Thinking about picking one up myself.
Over the shoulder with a orange plastic bag over their head to keep the blood off my pants and so I'm visible. Carry a few rubber bands also to keep the bag on his head. I just switch shoulders when my arm gets tired. I've thought about converting an old sling into a carry strap but there's just something about glancing over at his spurs that I enjoy.

Over the shoulder paracoed tote. I like the light weight Alps long spur vest instead of the heavier vests with a pouch.

I agree with you there, but anybody that knows me knows how I hunt and how I feel about turkey hunting. I'd rather never kill one again than to kill one that I didn't earn by calling to the gun.

I usually just tote him over my shoulder to keep the tail feathers from getting ruffled. If I have a long hike to get back to the truck, I use my EZ outdoors paracord tote.
I use the pocket on the back of the vest. I like to open the vest area after taking care of the bird and clean all the blood, feathers, dirt, leaves etc. before putting it up. I use to just sling him over the shoulder before I got a vest, but you usually would end up with a bunch of blood all over the back of your pants (which can make a mess when you climb in the truck seat).
It all depends for me on how many I shoot and have to carry out. If one and not a super long walk most likely over the shoulder. If a super long walk well over a mile or extremely steep terrain it goes in a vest. If more than one gobbler then in the vest and over the shoulder. Nothing like carrying out a few 20 pounders with out a vest on your shoulder! Makes me remind myself to never shoot 3 in one spot ever again and have to carry them all out.
I usually lay him with his back down in my vest pouch and tuck the head under his wing. Nothing flopping and no bloody back pockets.
I use a homemade turkey tote if I have a long walk. If a short walk, he's going over the shoulder.
If a boot lace breaks, I put the survivor in my turkey bag for carrying out a gob. I keep a couple in the bottom. That way, if a lace breaks, I've got that covered as well.
Nothing fancy, leather and canvas strap I made, works and light weight
