Title: Pot call blank thickness?
Post by: larry9988 on October 28, 2018, 09:43:33 PM
Hurricane Michael came through and left a lot of devastation in south Georgia. We had wind gusts to 115 mph. The number of pine and hardwood trees on the ground is unbelievable in the hard hit areas. I was cutting out trees that had fallen on some of my field roads and came across a nice, straight wild black cherry. I did not want to see it go to waste, so I cut it into three eight foot logs. I am going to take it to the sawyer in a couple of days and was wondering how thick to saw some boards that would be suitable for pot call blanks. I have made just about every kind of turkey call you can make, but I have never made pot calls. I want to cut some blanks from the boards in a year or so and have some calls made from some of the wood, maybe even trade off several blanks to someone for a call or two. So how thick should I have them sawed?

Hurricane Michael has leveled my town. Not a tree standing in panama city. I too have noticed tons of hard wood. Lots of hickory, oak and some pecan just north of me.
I usually start with 1" thick pot call blanks. You can sometimes get by with a little smaller. But if going to a saw mill. I would plan on turning 1" thick.

1" is a good starting point. Gives you a little room to play with

I agree, with a roughcut board, I would want it 1" thick. Factor in shrinkage and warping while it dries, then you can plane it down to desired thickness once it dries.

Thanks for the replies, I will have it sawed 1" thick. I am also going to get a board or two sawed 1 1/4" for some trumpet blanks. Thanks again.Larry
