Title: How many members here has taken a nice Jake or Jenny on the wing in the Fall?
Post by: quavers59 on September 30, 2018, 01:02:23 PM
This usually happens when, I am Pheasant Hunting and the Fall Turkey Season is open.  If you are a good Wingshot with Pheasants, a Plump Jake or Jenny is an easy Shot usually.

When I'm pheasant hunting, I'm not turkey hunting. Typically here in Illinois, what is left of our pheasant habitat, doesnt really hold turkeys.

When population was high fun to shoot them out of the air,use to be like a quail shot and have got a lot of toms that way too.
Haven't done it in a long long time , Missouri populations being what they have become.

If you have a good population I say go for it .
When walking or flushing we used 4 shot ,bust wingbone and such.
2 shot was great when we could use it.
Isn't any need for shooting max pellets in the 10 " loads, save those for the calling.

I did it a few years ago, but somehow it didn't do much for me. Probably won't do it again.

Did it a lot in the late 60's and early 70's in South Florida.

Shot a couple fall birds on the wing back in the days of #2 lead shot.  Can't use it now, so no more wingshooting.  No need, really.

My first fall bird was a jake when I was 18 and it was a wing shot. Funny thing...I shot the bird out of the sky and broke both wings and both legs. Other than that, I never touched the bird with any other shot.

A good pheasant dog will surely flush up a Drove. What, I have done in the past is to not put on a Bell around my Dogs neck until we reach the Pheasant Fields. Then just walk a Woods road on the way to the Fields. This can work when both Pheasant and Fall Turkey Seasons are open. Right now in my area of New York- the Fall Turkey Season got knocked back 3 weeks from October 1st. October 20th this year it opens. Pheasant Hunters will have to hold their fire if their  dog flushes up a flock.   I have Dwain Blains book--- Turkey Hunters Digest. In it is a picture of him stepping out from a old Barn and now in Full view of a flock of now Flying wild turkeys. He had a vintage Muzzleloader Shotgun as well.  He wrote of flying turkeys- Easy Pickings.   That said, I might not take ABBEY out more then a few times and take callers out the rest of the time.
