Title: NY Youth Success!
Post by: NYGobblergetter on April 25, 2011, 08:53:47 AM
I took my 12 year old stepdaughter out this weekend for NY youth season. Saturday was a bust with 20+ mph wind and rain. We did see a couple birds, but way off. Sunday the conditions we much better. We saw a bunch of birds and had several come in close. One was coming in on string, then got spoked by deer at 100 yards. After that, five 2 yr olds came within 35 yards, but we were using a 20 gauge with modifed choke (i'll get a new gun for next yr) so no go there. Then a jake came by, but would not come into the dekes. He stayed out in the field and I tried some fighting purrs that got him fired up, but it also brought the spoked gobbler back out of the woods. After a long stand off, I was able to get him to 25 yards. She let the 1100 bark and he dropped stone dead. 21.4lbs 8.5' beard 1" spurs. Not bad for a first bird!
