Title: Easter morning bird down!
Post by: mcgruff1533 on April 24, 2011, 11:52:33 PM
I had just gotten home from working my 7p-7a shift and was in the process of getting ready for bed.    I let my dog outside so she could relieve herself and found my entire back yard was full of Turkey's.    The birds scattered upon seeing my dog and I which gave me some time to get ready.

After getting my dog back inside, I grabbed my trusty Mossberg 535 and stoked it full of Federal Mag Shok 3.5"-2oz-#6 lead shells and a new Wright's .650" choke from Clark Bush.
I started calling them back with an aluminum surfaced, Bubinga pot custom call from Wendell Rye at Light's Out Calls.   The woods immediately erupted in gobbles behind my house and steadily got louder as the birds came back to my location.    This guy came within 30 feet my storage shed which I was using as a blind (I was ready for bed and wearing PJ's) :TooFunny:

I smoked this 27 pound bird at 9 paces from my location and he simply fell to the ground.     The spurs were .75" long and were somewhat rounded off at the tips.    His bulk of his beard was 9.25" long with several strands that were another 3-4 inches longer still.

I'm going to be dragging on this night shift, but it was totally worth filling my tag on such a nice bird that presented himself right in my back yard.

Sorry guys... no pictures of the PJ's.    BTW, they were just blue flannel.    Not sure if the Turkey's in my area are especially dumb, or if Wendell worked some serious magic when building that custom call for me.     This is the second time I've have birds come in really, really close.

If this keeps up, there won't be much need for expensive HTL shells with heavy payloads.    At 9 paces, I could make a clean kill with a 1 ounce load of #9's from a light Skeet shell.
