Title: Nail turkey call
Post by: TRG3 on July 19, 2018, 10:23:47 AM
For me, trying new "stuff" is a major enjoyment of turkey hunting. So...I was intrigued after watching the YouTube videos on using a nail turkey call, so I purchased some horseshoe nails and now am looking for a source for slate or similar material. Have any of my fellow turkey hunters had experience with the nail turkey call? I thought the YouTube videos sounded very realistic and I hope to have it perfected by next spring's season.

C. Brumfiel makes them, they sound nice. Here are some pics of his, I will see if I can find you a video.

The Nail calls I have are made by Doug Herman. Doug can make those things sing. His use a (sharpening) stone.

Sorry, I can't seem to remember his Youtube account.

I appreciate the input. I found Doug's YouTube video and have watched it several times. At this point, I'm practicing with some "marble" bases like those used on small trophies. I picked these up at a yard sale. They need to be cut them down to eliminate some of the weight. I'll try some of my old pot calls and a sharpening stone to see how they sound with a nail. (To hold the horseshoe nail, I cut off a half-inch section of a 2" limb and drove the nail in a little above center. I have small hands and this seems to work.) While I certainly don't sound like Doug at this point, it's apparent that some extended practice will improve my calling. While I could purchase a nail call from Doug, I enjoy trying to make my own and seeing how successful I can be with them. In fact, I'm currently scouring yard sale looking for one of those old screw-on canning lids like Grandma used to use. If memory serves me right, dragging a nail across it's surface has some promise!

Bought one from Neal, was supposed to have gotten a different wood, but didn't. Played around with it for about a month and sold it.

I guess anything will call in a turkey. I think it would take something that sounds better than a squeaky nail call to fool an old gobbler. I couldn't stand how shrill they sound. Almost annoying.

I bought one from Doug also. I know it CAN sound like a turkey cause a friend of mine can play it at least fairly well... I can't tell you how many times that thing has gone across the room!
That said, I saw a guy at Turkey Trot who could play one really well. I tried his and wasn't any better with it than I was with mine...
IF you can play them, they sound REALLY good!
