Title: building a lightweight gun
Post by: tomhunter on May 13, 2018, 08:41:51 PM
I am interesting in getting or building a lightweight turkey gun. I am thinking pump. open to 20 or 12 gauge. Looking to hear from you guys and your ideas. I currently use a 835 with 26 inch barrel. I love the gun and it has a great pattern but is very heavy. I am thinking shorter barrel too. Thoughts?

I switched to an 870 compact with 21" barrel and hand loaded TSS.  It's super light and shoots really well. My 10 yo son hunts with an 870 youth with 21" barrel. We killed 8 between us this year and didn't feel under gunned. I don't see the 3.5" 12 coming out of the safe any time soon.

The lightest 20 gauge pump is probably a mosberg and then a Win sxp.

535 is as light as many 20 gauges. A youth model aluminum frame O/U will likely go around 5.5#.

I have an sa20 mossberg in is around 5.5 lbs, a few of the o/u sxs guns are sub 6 lbs.  I researched guns for a month hunting down light weight options and found a deal on the sa20 turkey model.
