Title: Could Have Been a Bad Day
Post by: tomstopper on May 08, 2018, 06:38:31 PM
Yesterday when I come out of the woods, I was placing my gear in my truck and leaned my gun up against my passenger side front tire. I went to grab it last and when I did, this thing slithered out into the road. I quickly put the gun in the truck, jumped in and backed my truck over it. Can't stand snakes especially when they are where I walk in every morning.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180508/af63b94965a3a3c8ba630886b6909e58.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180508/56a773eb71d1499fcb8dae2052b726a5.jpg)

Those things can be pretty agressive. I ticked one off while plowing a field and it followed the tractor. I almost emptied the toolbox throwing stuff at it.

Wonder why they're called copperheads?? Just kidding it's obvious. Those things make me nervous. They are invisible in leaves. Way to kill him without wasting ammo.

Ya. I jumped back and was in my truck in seconds. Must have been behind that tire the whole time I was in my passenger door.  A little scary that's for sure

He said he ran over him I don't think he let him go anywhere lol I kill every water moccasin and copper head I see and have not even put a dent in the population.

I'm glad you didn't get bit.  I'm not scared of snakes but poison ones get the buzzard bait trick when I find them.

I wore my turtle skin snake gaiters all season here in Alabama and never saw a snake until right at the end of season. One little water snake that jumped off in the creek.  I did see one little rattle snake in the road that someone ran over.  I think it was just too cold most of the times I was out.

At first glance, yes.  But after further analysis, it appears to be a diamondbackcopperrattleheadedmocassin.

They don't make very good pets.

All venomous snakes I see get taken care of.  All of the nonvenomous ones get a pass.

I'm odd about snakes, I only kill them if they are in certain areas with humans around. I hunt a large quail plantation and we were asked to kill any venomous snakes because of the dogs and quail hunters. On my lease, I have only killed those found in camp. At home, any with venom are killed, but I will not purposely run over one that I see crossing the road or stop and kill one that is just in nature. Copperheads are a thing of beauty. The only snake that I truly dislike is a stinking cottonmouth

Here is one that got a pass, he wasn't bothering anyone.

This one happened to be right beside the lodge opening day last year of turkey season, after killing it, it made my morning walk in a little slower and I used the flashlight more. Odd thing is, when we came back to eat around lunch, you could see were another large, wide snake had crossed the road right beside this one. We assumed it was another rattler due to the width of the track.

I will say that if he wasn't we're I parked everytime I go to this spot, it would have gotten a pass. This is the third one I seen this year and the only one I killed. When I lived in NY, we used to hike in an area known for timber Rattlers and I had seen 2 that got a free pass. This one was just a little to close for comfort and my feet were at one point to close to it...

I don't blame you if it's where you park a lot.  I'm bad to wear canvas crocs while driving and switch to boots when it's time to hunt, I'd hate to let a snake live and then it buy thru my shoes one morning. I just hate to see them ran over for no reason other than to kill one. Well, except for cottonmouths, kill them anywhere just because

Any snake that doesn't bother me or my dogs gets a pass from me anymore.  they do more good than harm and we can't make a dent in the population
