Thinking of picking up a dedicated turkey gun and was wondering what some of yall recommend. I am shooting an older mossberg 835 that probably couldn't hurt to go get makeover but by the time I put the money into it I figure I could probably buy a new one. Looking at both pump and semi's. Would prefer a semi but not sure the cost is worth the benefit.
Why change? If your old 835 has been a GOOD one, get a new 835. For about $350, you will have a brand new gun, you can reuse the chokes you have and IMO have one if not the best patterning turkey guns on the market. Just saying.
I bought an 870 youth model 20 gauge and love it compared to my 835. lighter, shorter and patterns just as well.

Just getting a feel for what is out there. There are tons of threads on different set ups but I didn't have the time to go and research each one lol. Although with the season coming to an end I am not in too much of a hurry.
In Semi-auto I am looking into the Stoeger m3000, the Beretta a300 and the Weatherby SA-459
In the pump - Mossberg 835, Winchester SXP and the Remington 870 but I have seen tons of quality issues with the newer remingtons so I am kinda leaning away from them. I do like that stock on their turkey gun though.

I think you are looking at some good choices. I have shot quite a few of the guns mentioned and the only one that I would be wary of is the Versamax. I had nothing but trouble out of it and the day it left my house was one of celebration. :hb2:

Sounds like you've been bitten by the
"New Gun Bug". I've been there and ended up just about back to square one. You have an excellent gun right now and with a few modifications you can have a new look with the same killing effeciency. Different stock and forearm or paint/dip, sight system and possibly trigger work and you'll fall back in love with Ole Reliable. With turkey guns you are never going to get the $'s spent back out of them anyway, not to mention the time necessary to tweak them to the point that you have yours at right now. My comments may not be what you really want to hear, but I have spent a few thousand $'s chasing that "perfect" turkey slayer! The guns I enjoy now are more than capable of killing roosters way past what we talk about here on OG but the thrill of the hunt still drives me to pull them in like I used to do with the old guns and high brass loads. :camohat:
I've been looking to and I've decided the perfect gun isn't out there yet lol. I like several of the semi autos but they all come with longer barrels. You can get a pump with a 21" barrel but most of the semis are 24"+. If also like a pistol grip but I'm afraid it will make the grip to big. As in it looks like I might have a hard time reaching the trigger with my shorter fingers. The Weatherby is pretty nice looking. I've been toting my old 870 around and wouldn't mind something a littler more light weight. Maybe I'll jump on the compact 20ga bandwagon. Honestly a youth sized gun fits me pretty well.
