Title: Punched last tag in VA
Post by: Vaturkeyhntr on May 01, 2018, 01:13:40 PM
Went and hunted a new piece of property this morning with my dad.  He stopped by he property yesterday and saw a bird strutting in a horse pasture around mid afternoon.  Once we got in there this morning we set up in the area he saw the bird strutting the day before.  Soon the bird began to gobble and of course he wasn't where we expected him to be.  After repositioning I let him hit he ground before calling.  Once I knew he was on the ground I gave him a few soft calls and he gobbled right back.  After letting him know I was there I went quiet.  He soon began gobbling on his own.  Once he gobbled again I answered him with a few soft yelps.  His next gobble had cut the distance by half and he was only about 70 yards out.  After that he went quiet and I knew what was happening.  I soon saw him sneaking up the ridge right down my gun barrel.  As he crossed under a wooden fence he stopped at about 25 yards.  Hunt was over at 6:20 am.  Apex 20 guage TSS #9's are devastating

Congratulations sir. I hunted opening week in Virginia near Bland which is south west VA. I heard 2 gobbles the whole week but saw about 8 different toms. The wind was wicked and cold that week.
