Title: Question for the Turkey Gurus
Post by: Uncle Nicky on May 01, 2018, 08:44:59 AM
Does anyone know if wild turkeys mate exclusively in the morning, or will they mate any time during the day? I'm not asking if you can call one in later in the day, because I've done it many times. Just interested in knowing if they actually mate late afternoon or early evening.

Yep.  The one time I actually saw two turkeys breeding was in the afternoon.

Why else would they come to a caller for those who still use one.

I am not 100% sure, that is why I started the post. I had thought possibly they like to "find" each other late in the day, and consumate their romance the next day, but was mostly sure they bred just about anytime. I also wondered why a gobbler would roost near hens at night and gather them up in the morning (why not just breed them at will?) I can't ever recall actually seeing wild turkeys breed before (I wouldn't call a gobbler humping a decoy as real :turkey2:), nor deer for that matter.

Called in one once and all he had to do was come about 30 more yards until he could reach my hen decoys but instead stopped and mated with a cow Patty in the pasture.....
