Title: Western Missouri triple beard
Post by: dublelung on April 30, 2018, 11:42:09 AM
I just got back from a good public land hunt in Missouri. It was the first time I've been there since the 2015 season. Not near the amount of gobbling I heard 3 springs ago but still managed to hear and converse with gobblers every day. A whole lot of luck was on my side with this turkey as I went in to the area early and had no birds roosted. I was sitting by a tree at 5:40 when turkeys started sounding off way away on some private ground in 2 different directions, I heard one on public and I stood up to get a better course on him. He gobbled again and I took out my gps to mark him when one gobbled directly behind me! He was close enough to make my heart skip a few beats! I eased the gps back in my vest and slowly got my head net and gloves on. He would gobble about every 30-45 seconds and each time he did I'd shuffle around the tree. I spotted a turkey on the limb about 40 yards away and thought it was him but when he gobbled and it didn't move I knew it was a different one. I was finally facing his direction and slowly began to slide down the base of the tree when the turkey I was watching, a hen,  started putting and flew away 90 degrees. I eased on down the base of the tree fearing I'd screwed it up before I ever even got going. I managed to get in 2 light clucks and he pitched off the limb sailing my way! He hit the ground 15 steps to my left and started slowly walking away, fortunately it was still low light enough I was able to get the gun up and on him before he figured out I was trouble. He was my first triple beard, sporting 10", 9", 8.5" beards and weighed 21.58 lbs. One spur was 1" and the other was broken off at 5/8". I appeared he'd been shot twice last year as he had copper plated shot in his breast , as well as a few #4 lead in his back.

My kind of turkey.  Battle worn and war torn and stubborn boss bird.  Congrats on that one.  Those don't come often.
