Was able to follow up my archery opener success with a shotgun opening morning smackdown! Took my buddy and his 13 year old son with me. Neither one has ever hunted turkeys before. We got a good bit of snow yesterday so I knew the birds would be hitting the feeding areas hard. Got them set up in a little blind with some Avian-x decoys and backed off about 150 yards in case the birds veered from the decoys. We had a flock of about 100 birds roosted 200 yards away and gobbling like crazy. As soon as I sat down I heard a separate bird gobbling behind me and by itself so I jumped up and hauled tail over to a hill overlooking a field he was roosted on. Stuck a lone hen decoy on the top of the hill and as it got light I'm pretty sure he could see it. Did 2 soft tree temps and he cut me off both times. Let him fly down and he came running to me and I had to shoot him in self defense.
Grabbed him and jumped back on top of the hill in time to watch the big flock about 1/2 mike away moving towards my buddy and his son. They had 2 real dominant gobblers come right to the decoys real fast and they fumbled the ball and couldn't get a shot off. Those 2 went maybe 50 yards and cut back across the field from where they came to run off a grand total of 5 different gobblers. The dominant pair turned back around and came to the decoys again. Only 1 lived to die another day. His son harvested his first turkey! Very proud of them both.
Other good news is that was my first multi-bearded bird ever. He had 4 beards with one being 9 inches and all the rest about 2-3 inches each.
Congrats on the awesome hunt!
Congrats!!! I've only ever shot one multi beard. That was a bird I shot in the Fall. How was the weather. We are getting snow right now... :happyshake:
Hey, save some for me. Congratulations on an awesome bird and an awesome hunt. You did good putting the kid on a tom.
Super CONGRATS, on your multi-bearded bird makes even better.
Makes me wish I came out to the Black Hill straight from Oklahoma to go hunting, Will be a few days before I can get out of MN now because of a three day snow storm.
Congrats!
