Title: Fresh Burn
Post by: Damson on April 10, 2018, 09:05:46 PM
The NF just burned a tract of land on a WMA that I hunt.  I've never spent much time on this portion of the WMA.  Any tips on how to hunt a fresh burn?  I've heard that turkeys love these areas.

They love them.  I've killed a bird in a fresh burn that was still smoking and warm on the ground.

Ive never had luck with them fresh fresh, but in about two weeks when the green shoots start coming up they get hot! I have found that they usually roost on the edges initially and use the burns mid to late morning. Just my experience, someone else may have different experience

I've had some good hunts in fresh burns. I think they're attracted to them so quick due to the amount of dead insects laying all over the place in the wide open. As the green starts to show back up there's several varieties of tender shoots growing that they'll feed on.
