Title: Federal tss 20 gauge test results 9's
Post by: owlhoot on March 31, 2018, 10:08:33 PM
Question is on pellet count for the 1 1/2 oz load of tss 9's.
Pellet count 543 for this load ? (362 per ounce)?
Now I have only fired 2 rounds out of two different guns.
The weatherby sa08 with a hevi-choke and a 21" 870 with a Tru-loc , non federal hw type.
Both gave good patterns with the Remington getting 205 in the 10 plus 226 in the 20" (431)
And the weatherby sa08 did 205 in the 10" plus 206 in the 20" (411).
I use a 35"wide x 37 long and have 477 total on paper for the Remington and 470 for the weatherby.
Except for less than a half dozen all pellets are in a 25" area. This is what I have seen from Hw7 also except I could count within a dozen or less of pellet count.
So what happened to my 70 or so 9's tss supposed to be in this load?

I'm no expert but out of my Franchi Affinity Compact 20g with a 2 3/4" 17/16oz hand load made by a good buddy of mine in a .585 Trulock I'm doing 220-235 in the 10" and about the exact same in the 20". I think your numbers sound great as far as being close to a 50/50 split goes but those numbers  should be higher. I don't know the constriction of the chokes you used but I'm one to preach open up the choke for better patterns when it comes to TSS however just about every pattern post I've seen from the Federal's that looks good, seems to be from a tighter choke. I've never shot the Feds so I don't know how the new flight control wad really operates but against my better judgement to do with any TSS load I've ever shot, if the chokes you are using already lean towards the "more open" side, tighten it down and see what's happens. Again I have no experience with Federal TSS but that load seems to want a tighter choke and I do agree out of a 1.5 oz load you should be doing better numbers even if chasing a "hunting pattern" and not a hot core. There is a chance you may be too open.

My numbers are nearly identical to yours in my M2 with a Rob Roberts .570. I don't think I would want it any tighter for hunting, but I was also wondering where those missing pellets are.

Guess you gotta cut one open and count! Get a graduated cylinder and check density, too. TSS varies in density and size. What one calls a nine might not be.

Oh dang don't feel like doing that lol . The 10 rounds I have were tough enough to get.
Federal tss 9's may be 8 1/2's or the charge is light.  You all that load tss , What's your pellet count?
Ever notice a size difference ?

Yes there has been a size difference. I have seen them from 8.5-9.5 sold as 9s.

Ok thanks Snapper.  Appreciate it.
Federal tss must be a bit larger. I counted the .410 paper this morning and got 242 shot instead of 294 for that load also.
