Title: Texas Turks
Post by: jperrotti on April 19, 2011, 05:50:14 PM
Took a trip near Seymour, Texas to go after some Rios. Some hard hunting in the wind. But lots of turkeys. Guide also said they are more responsive later. Dunno but only got one turkey to respond in the mornings after hearing multiple birds off the roost.

My brother got one the first evening. Never gobbled. 9" beard 3/4" spurs.

The next morning we heard probably 15 off the roost then zilch after they flew down. Hunted that evening somehow heard one in 25-30 mph wind. Almost got busted due to the wind he sounded a lot further off. After calling for about 30 minutes was able to lure him in. 9" beard 1-1/8"spurs.

Put him up in a tree and kept hunting with my wife.

Called some hens in that had a jake and this super jake in tow. She put the smack down on him.

He had 6" beard and 1/2" spurs that were starting to sharpen. Not sure if he was young two year old or an old jake. Either way we were thrilled with him.

Lots of turkeys but that wind is a killer. Not what I'm used to. May make that trip again after I complete the grand slam. Going for the Merriams next year
